Is it Worth Reading? Shattered Glass by Maria V Snyder

November 04, 2020

" Unfortunately, not everything is in our power, and bad things do happen. But that’s not your fault nor our fault.  Sometimes glass shatters despite all efforts."

Opal

This is the last work for the Glass series which also included in the Chronicles of Ixia. So just in case you don't know anything about that already, i've been posting a lot of review for the last series in this chronicles which is Soulfinder Series, you can go to my other review  like Shadow Study and Night Study for a bit reference of it.

Reading Order

Shattered Glass is part of Glass Series which also the part of The Chronicles of Ixia so it's probably a bit complicated to explain. In our "book bible" Goodreads, Shattered Glass is number 3.5 in Glass series, but if you read this in order of The Chronicles of Ixia Series which is consist of Study Series, Glass Series and Soulfinder Series, the timeline would be perfect if you read this novella AFTER you read the first and the second book of the Soulfinder Series which is Shadow Study and Night Study.

What is it All About?

While trying to teach Reema (her adopted daughter) how to work with molten glass in order to teach her patience, Opal receives a letter from Master Magician Zithora Cowan (who resigned from the Sitian Council two years ago in order to search for her sister) that asked Opal to come and help her to heal her sister. Assuming the letter is a trick since the happening between Sitia and Ixia is still going on, but Opal still want to help and find out what happen to her mentor. Bring along Nic and Eve to her mission, left Devlen her husband with Remma.

Turns out that Zelene (Zithora's sister) married to Gunther Jewelrose, who's trapping her and himself in his house because he's very rich, super rich ever his mom tried to kill him in order to steal his wealth. When Zithora finds Zelene, she also being trapped there because Gunther afraid that if he let Zithora go, she will just go back there with Sitian army to steal his gold. Zelene is purposely ingesting jugle weed to made herself sick, so Opal come and pretends to heal her while planning their escape.

Is It Worth Reading?

As always in this series i will give you my verdict (please click here if you don't know how i rate this series and for further information, read the section for is it worth reading rating system) whether is it worth or not.

One that you must know about this series is that this book is a cliff hanger. So if you want to know the answer of the continuation of the story, you must complete reading the next book of the Chronicles of Ixia series which is the Dawn Study.

My Verdict

Skip it. Well.. if you count to what happened in Glass Series, the story already end, this novella is only an additional story while things happening in Soulfinder Series, but with Opal POV. The thing about is, if this novella takes Opal's POV and telling the story that related to the Soulfinder series, i would suggest you to read it. But since this one is a complete separate story to the main problems in the Chronicles of Ixia, but included because it's in the timeline of the chronicles of Ixia's story goes. So i can say, you just can skip it and still didn't miss a thing from the main story.

Of course because this novella explain where Opal is at that kind of time (which i also wondering where she is while i read the Soulfinder series), where Yelena and Valek need more people to help, and also explain how Zithora back to Sitia, but doesn't really leave a big impact in my opinion. And of course as always this Skip It doesn't mean the book is bad, still worth reading, but again, not really has a big impact for the whole series.
