Is It Worth Reading? The Fork, The Witch and The Worm

September 23, 2020

"Scars means you survived. It means you're tough and hard to kill. It means you lived. [...] Sometimes, if you work very hard, you can mend a break so that it's stronger than before."

Tornac

So, i went back to the Alagaësia world this month with this book. If you don't know about this book, this is a companion book for Inheritance Circle or mostly people more familiar with "The Eragon Series". The Inheritance Circle consist of four main works, and this book here, is probably one of numbers of companion books in the future for this inheritance circle, because in the spine it says "Volume I : Eragon", so hopefully Christopher Paolini will release another books or at least the Volume II right? I'm so down into this.

 Reading Order

If you look up at the Goodreads you will see that this book is the first book the series of Tales from Alagaësia, but if you click the series info, there's no other book listed in this series yet (at least by the time i'm typing this review) so hopefully there will be (and should be) another volume of this Tales from Alagaësia series. But in order to understand this book,i would recommend you to read the Inheritance circle first before you jump into this book.

What is it All About?

So this book consist of three short stories but still with Eragon in focus after what happen in Inheritance Circle. Each title of the short stories become the title of this book :
1. The Fork : Talking about Eragon got showed by Eldunarí, the man name Tornac
2. The Witch : Eragon meet Angela the herbalist who come visit him along with Elva, the girl that got blessing by Eragon when she was baby but turns out become kind of curse because Eragon got wrong in speaking the ancient words
3. The Worm :  This probably actually the first story that made Christopher Paolini decide to release another book because this one is definitely longer than the other two. The story about Tales about Old Dragon in the village of Urgals with Ilgra, a young female urgals as the main character, which i find it really fresh and interesting as point of view.

Is It Worth Reading?

So this is the first book of Christopher Paolini that published in less than 500 pages! Yes his work always came out in thick thick book and getting thicker in every book, but i got to say i always love that side of it.

So as always, i'll gave a barometer for this book whether this book is worth reading or not

1. Skip it : doesn't really related to the whole series, in meaning you can totally skip this one without feeling missing a puzzle from the series. Kind of waste your time to read it.
2. Neutral : Kind of related but kind of not. It depends on your perspective, you can either read it or skip it.
3. Read it : Totally a must to read this one, you might miss a piece of puzzle if you skip this one in whole series.

My Verdict

I gotta say Neutral. I expect more about Eragon after the inheritance circle, did he meet Arya again, (Spoilers : the answer is no.) but instead it talked a lot about anybody else but him, although he is still in the spotlight but i expect more, like what about the dragon, what after that?
The story is a bit cliff hanger for me, i need moreeee probably this is me being bias, but well.. it's not as i expect it would be.
But still happy to meet him again, and always love Christopher Paolini's writing style.
Really can't wait to start his Sci-Fi series tho (stay tuned, i definitely gonna read it, but well... probably this will be a long one to wait because the series just started and i know how long it takes for him to release each book, and since i'm not good at starting a series that still ongoing and prefer waiting for it to finish first then start reading it, so it probably take years! But i won't complain). Okay bye!
