Call Me by Your Name Book and Movie Review

June 26, 2020

Book and Movie review of Call Me By Your Name, DISCLAIMER : this post contains spoilers! Please skip this one if you haven't read or watch the movie and didn't want to get spoiler about it! But if you don't mind or already read or watch the movie please continue reading and be my ranting buddy about it.

So i finally watch the famous LGBT movie which is an adaptation from a book with same title. This movie was released back in 2017 yet i’m so late in the game just watching it almost 3 years after the movie was released.

I gotta say i was being super judgy for LGBT related books and movie and i'm ashamed of it. This book really breaks my paradigm of LGBT relationship. So this is how i think about it before : between two of them there must be the one that become a bit feminine than the other tho he is a man. Or probably both of them are. But in this book it's totally not!

Elio just being a 17 y.o boy that trying to discover his sexuality, Oliver is one with charming, everyone love him.

So the story follow Elio, who live somewhere in northern Italy, met Oliver who was Elio's father research assistant for that summer.

Elio who is a music prodigy, he plays guitar and piano, Oliver is the "superstar" know himself so well, so confident, being love by everyone just a second they meet him.

Love Sparks, obviously. But i'd say beautifully mature way, the way that Elio confront Oliver about "the things that matter" to him aside from his knowledge about things around the city the way he confess his feeling is soooo different than normal people would say.
You wouldn't read "i love you" in whole book (or movie) but still we can see their feeling for each other.

They said it's a coming of age movie, and i totally agree with it. With Elio in the focus. But this book not only about Elio discover his sexuality, but also about accepting who he is, about amazing parent that not everybody has, not just back in the set of time where they are back then but even for now days.

Call Me by Your Name Quotes

I got two quotes that i love from this book because it hits in my heart

" is it better to speak or die?"

This one is when Elio's Mother read a classic book about a knight that has a feeling for the princess and don't know if he should confess his feeling or not.

Elio also talk about it to Oliver after that, which Oliver responds with question did he or didn't he? in the end the knight didn't do it. and Oliver said "Figures"

For me, this is kind of the way Elio to ask about Oliver's opinion whether he should or shouldn't say a thing about his feeling. Which become one of my fave part in the book

"Nature has cunning ways of finding our weakest spot"

I think this one is the most famous scene in the movie, when Elio's father talk to him after Elio back. The dialogue last about 5 minutes in the movie, in the book they even spent a whole chapter (or almost) to talk about it.

Lots of great quote from the way his dad talk to him but this one is my fave. Nature indeed has always cunning ways to find our weakest spot.

This scene shows how much Elio's dad acknowledge Elio's feeling and being such a great parents that give advice instead of judging him for who he is.

Movie and Book in Comparison

The movie definitely end earlier than the book, while the book ends about almost 2 decades after it. But to be honest i'm okay with the ending of the movie, beautifully dramatic.

Some scene included in movie like when Elio ask for truce in the beach

Also when Marzia met Elio after he's back from the trip (which in the book he was back by himself, in movie he asked his mom to pick him up) Marzia said she didn't hate him and ask for keep to be a friend for life.

There's also a one character that not included in the movie which is Vimini, Elio's neighbor who is sick and kind of have feelings for Oliver who hangs out with her quite a lot of time.

Vimini being for not included in the movie i think also made the ending of the movie quite different. In the book Olive came back to Elio's home and told him that he was engage and getting married in spring, while in the movie he just told him by phone.

The reason i said that because Vimini was upset that Oliver just go away without saying goodbye in the book. When he got back in winter he apologize to her and hang out some more.

But again i said i'm okay with the ending of this movie because it makes more space for the sequel movie to tell.

The Sequel : Find Me will be also adapted to movie

Happy to say that we will got more about the continuation for Elio and Oliver stories!

So, after i read CMBYN i googled about it, Andre aciman (The Author) decided to write the sequel after Luca Gudagnino (Movie Director) tease each other about should they or not make the sequel, of course because the movie is a big hit and lots of fan asked for it.

Find Me released at 2019 and it's official that will be adapted into movie also, with Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer still in the cast! The ending of the movie CMBYN again to me is perfect for me because i just can't wait to the second movie be filmed because the set of the book of find me was in between of the after Oliver left Italy and back again 20 years after. Also a bit of after the ending of CMBYN.

So i just can't wait for it to be released! They said the filming is pending because of COVID-19 which probably means it'll be filmed asap after this pandemic ends.

Well, this is quite a long review one. Hope you find it amusing. Tell me what you think about it, the book and the movie.
