Bring Me Back! Rebel by Marie Lu

November 21, 2020

This is Eden Bataar Wing, Daniel’s younger brother.
That’s who I am to others.
[...] I may be a star student, good at figuring things out … but my brother is Daniel Altan Wing.
Ten years ago, he was known as Day, the boy from the streets who led a revolution that saved the Republic of America. [...] For his country, for me, he had nearly died.
Yeah. It’s kind of hard to top that.

I should stop adding new series to my blog but i just can't help it!! Today i'm bringing you the series that take you back to the tunnel of nostalgic, triumphant days of author's older works. This becoming a trend lately that an author going back to their older works and continuing it, either it's a sequel or prequel of it. So this one would be the series about that books.

What's so different about this series other than the review? I would go explain how long since i read the series before jump into this new book, do i reread them in order to setting myself up to remember the plot and everything, how much i remember, and at last, is it really need for the author release it.

My Current State

I started reading Legend series back in 2016 so it has been 4 years after i read it. To be honest i only remember few, i mean i remember a lot of Day as the boy who lead the revolution in Republic, June was getting set up to track and arrest Day because of the accusation for killing his brother (which he didn't do it) and in the end of the series, Day lost mostly his memories (mostly while his memory with June)going to Antartica and June decided to let it be like that and boom. The End.

Yes people it's an open ending. At that time i don't mind the ending. Since i'm the type of people who appreciate the progress more than the ending. Still included in my favorite series of all times. But when Marie Lu announce that she's releasing the next book, i got so hyped, well.. mostly all Legend fans got hyped and yes!! finally that open ending comes to the happily ever after to Day and June.

I did prepare myself to read a lot of novellas of legend series in order to go back to the setting of the world (as you can see by my novellas week lately) but i didn't reread the whole series in order to get myself "online" to the series. But i did read the last few chapter of Champion and i figured out that Eden who become the POV of Rebel (i did a sneak peak of the title first chapter when i bought Rebel) is mentioned a lot in Legend series (probably we can say he's become mostly part of the adventure) but i don't really remember him. I guess 4 years indeed long enough for my short term memory.

Synopsis

In this book, as i said before, the main character is Eden, and also set up in Ross City Antarctica. Different than Republic, this country use Level System as their Rules to all the citizen.

Everyone in Antarctica has a chip embedded under their skin, right behind their left ear. Through that chip runs a technology that overlays virtual images over your vision.

Eden who is living in the shadow of his brother, Daniel (we call Day as Daniel now) is struggling to keep up for being himself instead of just "Daniel's younger brother". He still got nightmares by the trauma in the past while he still in republic but didn't really talk about it with Daniel.

Feeling that he doesn't belong to the Sky Floors where everything is perfect, he become a good friend with Pressa, a lower city citizen that work as a cleaner in his school, and often got "bully" by other student in the school.

Daniel in other hand is working for AIS (sort of police in Ross City) trying to catch the a criminal who in past two years has been doing lots of illegal things like giving loans for the citizen in lower city and ask for double, killing people, and holding an illegal drone race, that happens to be hold in next few day, and Eden's joining.

What I Like

I really like the world building in this book, Antarctica is just an amazing, futuristic country that i think i will go and live there. I think it would be fun.

"Let us never forget the struggle between global tyranny and democracy that led us to found this free nation of Antarctica, where every person has the chance to work their way up from nothing, and where technology, not human ego and error, governs how successful you can become"

Understanding the idea of why they made the Level System, to encourage people to do good, i'm down to it. Just imagine the image overlays in your vision, without any device you can easily navigate here and there, feels kind of handy, although thinking about chip below your ear is kind of scary.

Villain

Dominic Hann is the kind of villain that i like. The one that tear me into two parts, either to support or punch him in the face. His personality is kind of complex. He is villain, the one who slay people easily, but in other hand he got the reason why he did it.

"I blame this entire damn system, the Levels and the floors and the hierarchy of this place that made it impossible for us to get out of our predicament. I blame the fact that the President sells the Undercity the dream that, if they only worked hard enough, they too could Level themselves up to the Sky Floors. I blame the fact that the dream is a fantasy"
Dominic Hann

Also, he also got a bit of resemble of Day in Republic, a guy from lower class, struggling to fight for revolutions. Although the way he did it is wrong. Anyways, he got the charm.

"My first impression of him is that he seems too young to have such an effect on everyone else around him. I mean, my brother is Daniel—I know what it looks like for a young person to be revered. But this is different. This guy isn’t that much older than Daniel, but the ripple of his presence through the crowd almost feels like a living thing. "

The Return of June and Day

Finally, the answer is here people! For what you've been waiting and aching for. June and Daniel is back! I always like the way they interact with each other. Although the progress seem so slow and frustrating, but in the end they are back together.

“My home is where you are,” I murmur.
“Come home soon, then,” she whispers back.

 What I Don't Really Like

Well, by the first sneak peak of the chapter i really expect for Eden's adventure and how his character grows. Of course he is the main character here but i don't think he as a really strong, striking character. I know he's smart, yet delicate in other part. His loves for flowers, keeping it in between pages of thick books is such a romantic side of him, but i still think Daniel's POV outshines his.

It's a sad one because this should be like, a second season of Legend series, with different city, different rules, different villain to fight, different country to fight for, but i still can't wait to read Daniel's chapter more while i'm reading Eden's chapter. Of course the chapters are divided in same amount of chapters, with more pages for Eden's in some part but i still yearning for Daniel's part more

In Conclusion

It's a Uh Yeah read for me ( please go to my rating system for more if you new for my rating system). But i can't count it as the continuation of Legend Series, i mean in terms of the continuation of Republic, although we got a glimpse of Republic in the next 10 years, but since it's a different adventure, like i said, i would say it's different season of the series.

So i would you suggest to read it if you want the continuation of Day and June. And think it as another season of the series, don't expect much of the Republic Days here.
