“Sometimes it’s best not to look as far as you’re able to look, or to listen to everything you’re able to hear.”
― Heimdal ―

Hellow everyone, welcome back to another episode of Outshine the Previous series where i will compare this second (or third) book of the series to the previous one and see if the book is worth to be continue since the previous one didn't really hit the spot for me. To be honest the first book of this Magnus chase and the god of Asgard is not that bad, i really enjoy the book but it just didn't really meet my expectation (probably because i'm such a huge fan of Rick Riordan works). Without further ado, let's dive in!

Previous Book

It started with a night where Magnus's mom died because an attack by a magical wolf. Magnus has been living in street ever since. One day Magnus found out that one of his uncle searching for him turns out his other uncle (the one that his mom told him not to be trusted) found him and asked him to retrieve his family heritage that turns out to be a sword that fated to be in the hand of the fire giant called as Surt when Ragnarok happened. Mangus became one of the member of Odin's army who prepared to Ragnarok and tried to postpone Ragnarok as longer as they can.

Synopsis

In order to stop (or again maybe we should call it "postpone") the Ragnarok (again), Magnus have to help Thor to find his hammer (he lost it, again!) fight the giants and of course encounter with the god of Mischief : Loki.  Not only have to do that, he also have to help his best friend to cancel the wedding! Will he and his team success for being a wedding crashers? Well i guess i will stop explaining the synopsis here before i gave too much spoiler and you won't enjoy reading it.

Why Worth a Second Chance?

Again let me explain why this book is in this series, the first book was okay, but it just didn't really meet my expectation. Magnus in first book just simply a character that being helped by a lot of people. Of course a hero that start from his death in the first chapter of the book is kind of new, but i expect a lot from him. Like how special he is would be, which god is his father, (which turn out the god that i never heard before, but it was fine because Rick never give the obvious) and what his power would be.

He is strong alright, but not as strong as the other heroes in Rick's book. Probably because he is the son of Frey, god of fertility and health, ruler of peace, that's why he's not that "powerfull" at first, he got helps from an elf and a dwarf, also a talking sword that can kill a giant by itself, that made Magnus knock off unconsciously several time. But till the end, he still did that! he didn't really hold the sword and attack, he just "jack! attack!" kind of situation. And THAT made it didn't meet my expectation. The adventure? it was fun! but for the personal character of Magnus? not so much for me.

In this second book, we see a lot of development in here. Not to mention a lot of different characters that being introduced in first book, but also the second book introduce us to another character that we never met before, a gender fluid character. I really like the first book when we introduced to lots of different character, a berserker, a man from a war, a fierce girl, and a Muslim Valkryie. This second book we meet Alex, which also a son (or daughter) of Loki.

When the first book we got introduced by the Muslim's praying ritual, we also got the Muslim Fasting period before their big celebration day : Ramadan (hey isn't it a good coincidence that in real life people really in fasting month right now that i made this review?) which is back again new things to be introduced from a writer like Rick (which i do believe he's not a Muslim, which is good!)

My Verdict

I can say that i really enjoy the second book better than the first book. I really like how Rick Riordan introduce more about Muslim (tho i'm not Muslim, but i always found this religion being mentioned in the book is uniquely fun read). And also Alex the gender fluid character is super new to me, and i really like Alex personally so i really enjoy reading the book. So yeah, it was an Uh-Yeah read for me, definitely worth to continue this book to the next one.
