"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities"
― Professor Dumbledore ―

Hello everyone! Welcome back to another chapter of "Outshine the Previous" where i give a second chance for the series since the previous book didn't do well to me or didn't meet my expectations. Today I'm bringing you the second book of the famous Harry Potter series : The Chamber of Secrets. Without further ado, let's dive in!

Previous Book

As i mentioned it before, this book is the second book of Harry Potter series, and the first book is "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" or "Sorcerer's Stone" depending on which edition you are reading (UK or US). I've made the review about the previous book before, so if you missed it (and curious) please click the picture below.

Basically the first book is about Harry Potter, the boy who lived, discover that he's not just a normal boy, an orphan because his parents died in car crash, but died because of attack from dark wizard, the You-know-who, Voldemort. With lots of difficulty because his aunt who raise him since he's just a baby who hate wizard, Harry finally got to go to wizardry school, Hogwarts. But the magical school not only full of amazing things, but also dangerous side too. A mystery of the weird things that keep occurring made Harry and his friends tried to solved them.

Synopsis

The second year is here, but Harry of course have to deal with struggles, lots of them. Dursley family that didn't want him to go back to Hogwarts, a mysterious house elf that suddenly came to his house asking him to promise to not going back to Hogwarts this year, which also lead to Harry and Ron can't go through the wall in the train station to platform 9 ¾.

His arrival to the Hogwarts sadly didn't happily welcomed because of the flying car he and Ron use to get there, and the mysterious event of The Chamber of Secrets that has been opened by the Heir of Slytherin, that lead to lots of attacks to muggle-born wizard in the school. Who is the Heir of Slytherin?

Why Worth a Second Chance?

If you read my review from the first book, we can see that Harry is not as "kind" as he is in the movie. He also hates Hermione at first, but yes he is brave, but also a rule breaker too. So he is in the mix of Hero and Villain to me in the first book. He can be bad, but he can be good too.

In the second book we see it why. He got some of Voldemort's power while he tried to kill Harry, that's why the sorting hat want to sort him into Slytherin at first because it sees what his capable of. Harry struggles to believe is he got sorted to Gryffindor right, is he suppose to be sorted in Slytherin like the sorting hat want him to be? But as Professor Dumbledore said, it's our choice that made who we are not just what we capable of.

I think one thing that I discover from the book that different from the movie is that Filch is a Squib. A wizard that didn't have their wizardry power. That explains why he hates students a lot. And also Ginny got more scene here in first two books than the movie. It shows a lot her affections toward Harry from the first book than in the movie. Specially the valentine day part, where she wrote a song about him. Also about Gilderoy Lockhart's jealousy of Harry's fame might overcome his, and that answers why Harry refuse Lockhart's help when he want to heal his broken arm.

My Verdict

The book was fun to read, it was Uh-Yeah for me. I really like Harry's adventure, the plot twist too! I was falsely remember that the culprit behind the Heir of Slytherin is Percy, but the ending of why he's being there where he isn't suppose to be is because he's in love with the girl from Ravenclaw, is so cute. Am i remembering wrong? maybe Percy will do something bad later in the other book? because i think he will. I guess we'll see about that. And that leads to, yes, it worth the second chance, and this book outshines the first book for me.
