Hello peeps! Welcome back again to Chapter eleven of "The Perks of Third book" series where i will compare the last book to the other two previous book of it, and see whether i like the third book more, is it because it's my lucky number three or because it's finale of the series or maybe didn't like it at all. Without further ado, let's dive in!
A Quick Flashback
Magnus Chase who died (questionably) hero, become one warrior of Odin practicing and preparing (also tried to postponing) the Ragnarok. Defeating the Fenris Wolf and the Fire Giant (and other giants), help Thor to retrieve the (secretly) stolen weapon (TWICE!) and of course fighting Loki God of Mischief's wit.
Now that Loki succeed to be released from his prison, preparing to Ragnarok to be happened, can Mangus and his friend stop him?
Comparing Each Book In Series
Succeed to postpone the Ragnarok twice doesn't mean it isn't gonna be happen. Somehow i see the irony of the warrior of Odin, they are preparing for the Ragnarok, but also trying so hard to postpone it. And of course, the fate of it somehow become the burden than Magnus have to carry in each book.
I see a lot of things that going on in this series in comparison with other series before, but for the most striking one i think in characters point
Characters Development
Not only Mangus who start his adventure in fun way, we also meet lots of different characters that we've never seen before, like Dwarf that can turn to be stone if got a direct sunlight, an Elf that use sign language since he's deaf, a Muslim Valkyrie and lots of fun character in the Hotel Valhalla.
But the one that really strikes the most is the new character that being introduced in the second book : Alex Fierro, a gender fluid character. He (or she, depends on which gender he is that day) is somehow a strong character even better than Sam the Valkyrie even they both are daughter (and son) of Loki the God of Mischief. I think Alex's identity as gender fluid is quite reasonable since Loki is not his (or her) father but mother (long story, but well.. read the book!) and yet Alex can show the right character whether when he is a man, or a woman. I think Alex already stolen the spotlight since the first of his (or her, gosh i kind of tired to type this now lol!) appearance in the second book. I found Alex's character is unique yet interesting.
Plot
From all the series by Rick, we can see, that our main character, tho a small (demigod or einherji) always find the big mission to stop the apocalypse which suppose to be the task for god not just a mere half human. Not to mention all the task always need to be stop in super tight timeline.
In first book we need to stop the Fenris wolf to be free, also fight the Fire Giant, and fight another giant in order to retrieve Thor's weapon. In second book we must stop the wedding of Sam with the another Giant, and stole back Thor's hammer (why Thor himself didn't try to solve his own problem you might ask? just read the book!) which also have to save his Dwarf Friend, Blitzen after being sliced by the unseal-able cut from magic sword, go to elf world meet his Elf Friend, Hearstone's father to get the stone that can seal the sword's cut and finally meet Loki face to face.
In the third book we go along with Magnus and his team to stop Loki start the Ragnarok by go to Jorvik through the sea with lots of encounter with sea monster and again, (surprise!) the giants!
Magical Sword
In this series unlike the other one, we will encounter magical sword that can talk! First book we meet Sumarbrander a.k.a Jack which the sword that fated to be in the hand of the fire giant : Surt, when the Ragnarok happen. Jack is the sword that claimed to be the sharpest one that can cut anything.
In second book we meet Snoknung, the sword that can make a cut that cannot be healed except if you have the pair :Snoknung stone. This one, (which Jack claimed as a she) cannot be wield if any woman in present, and only can be wield by the descendant of Norse King, which of course Chase family are part of the line.
In third book, it's not that the sword is talking, but we finally know that Percy's sword is a she (thanks again Jack) which named Anaklusmos (or as we know as Riptide) as you might know already draws power from ocean, which of course only works for children of Poseidon, like Percy.
I think other than the sword we can talk about the boat too, the striking yellow boat that Magnus and friend use to the quest to capture Loki, which they called as Big banana is the present from Magnus' father : Frey. This ship can turn into napkin, which is super easy to bring along.
The other ship we meet is Naglfar, the ship that Loki use to start the Ragnarok. This ship is made of fingernails and toenails (YUCK!) of those who died outside the battle (which they called as the dishonored death) so the one that isn't honorable in their death will fight along Loki's side in Ragnarok as revenge.
Loveline
In this book we got three main couples, first Sam with her normal human fiance Amir Fadlan. At first i thought she will end up with Magnus in first book but turns out her relationship with Amir is too strong, i mean, how can a normal human boy, understand that your fiance is a Muslim just like you, but work as a Valkryie to Norse God? But amir is such a sweet boy.
The other one we meet Mallory the fierce and Halfborn Gunderson the berserker. I found this couple so funny specially in the third book they broke up but then end up together again, which is super cute.
And the last one of course we can't skip Mangus' relationship with Alex. To be honest i was shocked at first from the first time Mangus' encounter with Alex he already curious about this person. He end up easily recognize Alex's current gender easily, even when Alex suddenly change it at that day. I like his interaction with Alex when he is a man, but i lovveeee when Alex is a women. I mean, it's new, kinda weird, but i think i'm okay with it.
In Conclusion
I think this book completes the series. It's a Woot! Woot! for me as the book. I get to know why Mangus is not such a fierce fighter despite of he's the main hero in the story, by the end of the book it's his nature as Frey's son to be that way. His healing ability increased to be better in the last book. So yeah, really recommend it for you to try reading this series, a complete different series for me in comparison with the other Rick Riordan's book (not saying the other are not as good as this one) So, give it a try!
