Bring Me Back! Interworld by Neil Gaiman and Michael Reeves
September 11, 2021
“Sometimes war is necessary to teach us the value of peace. Sometimes you need to learn the real value of diplomacy in avoiding war."
― Mr. Dimas ―
Hello everyone! Welcome to second theme of the September Month that i called it as "Pick up what's i've left before" which would be the month (or months) where i will continue some series that i have left unfinished, either i have read the first book but haven't read the rest of series or finish a book that i've read a bit but i put it down (I know i never DNF, but there's a book i've read for years but left out).
Also welcome back to chapter two of Bring Me Back! series. This series is dedicated to bring us back to nostalgic triumphant works of author, since lately lots of author made a sequel or prequel of their works. I know this Interworld isn't that kind of new release that created from a successful series before by the author, but this book brings back a nostalgia for me so i decided to include it in this series. Without further ado, let's dive in!
My Current State
To your information the reason why i included this one in this series because it literally "bring me back!" kind of feeling to me. I already read this book before three years ago, but in translated version of it. I remember i read it because one of my reader friend (actual reader friend not from the internet kind of friend) lend me this book. I was going to continue the series but it didn't has the next book translated to Indonesian at the moment so i let go.
But since you know me i'm an OCD, i have to finish whatever i've started no matter what, so i decided to collect this book again in English copy of it. And since it has been years since i read it, i decided to reread the first book instead of just continue to the next book. And there you go, that "bring me back!" moment.
To be honest i don't remember anything about the book now, all i know that i was proud that i finally finished another sci-fi book by the time i finished it. And there was a distinct writing style between Neil and Michael (i dunno which one is which) but i still think there are two different style, either it's based on sci-fi one or magical one. But yeah, in conclusion i don't remember anything about the book now. So here we are, me, rereading. Wow, what a rare scene.
Synopsis
Turns out the world is not only the world of he knows, but also it has thousand alternate of it. Some earth are ruled by magic, with HEX as the group who ruled them, and some ruled by science with Binary ruled by them. Joey found himself saved from the HEX by a person from Interworld, a society with its objective to keep the balance between the magic and science. But with both HEX and Binary as their enemy, war is always there.
What I Re-Learn
I guess because it's not about a sequel or prequel of book but reread the book that i've read years ago, i will compare it with my experience when the first time i read the book, (which by the way i don't remember anything about it like i said before) instead of compare it with the main series that has been released (just like the way it suppose to be in this series).
As i already said before i don't really remember the detail about the first reading experience except that i see the different writing style in some part specially in magic and science part that made me think "oh so this is how it feels like to read a book with two authors in it. But that's the translation version that i read at first, now when i read it the second time, plus this is the original language that the author writing it, actually i don't really see the big gap difference in the writing style.
I really like the writing language, it's easy to understand, i really like Joey's narration, his sense of humor also become one of the trait of his character. I think it's a good book to suggest for a friend that want to start reading a sci-fi genre.
"The whole picture is what we call the Altiverse. Not to be confused with the Multiverse, which means the entire infinity of parallel universes and all the worlds therein. The Altiverse is that slice of the Multiverse that contains all the myriad Earths. And there are a lot of 'em"
― Jay ―
I learned that the Multiverse and Altiverse are two complete different things. Altiverse is just part of multiverse that actually kind of the probabilities that can happen in multiverse (i hope i got it right this time, since i read it quite couple times of Jay explaining it to Joey).
The Altiverse is not going to create a brave new world based on your decision to wear green socks today instead of red ones. Or if it does, that world will only last a few femtoseconds before being recycled into the reality it split off from.

The Choosen One
I always like this trope. But this one somehow hits different. He's really bad at finding directions turns out it's because he's a
walker, that see more directions between the universe instead of only in
one world. He turns out to be the best Walkers the most powerful one.
"he'd charged blindly through the Altiverse, ripping his way through hundreds of probability layers as if they were tissue paper. Like a bull going through a china shop—or a couple of thousand identical china shops"He gained his memory back thanks for the help from Hue the "mudluffs" (a MDLF, multidimentional life-form) that seems harmless but also powerful. Going back to save his friends (that actually looks like him because they're another verse of him in other universe, which also all start with J, and some with H as their first name) and in the end killed the Lady Indigo who he met at first when he accidentally Walked before saved by Jay.
In Conclusion
I'm glad that i decided to reread this book. If you know me you probably already know i never reread a book but i guess i really glad i reread the book. Although the second experience was just so-so (click here if you dunno what i mean) for me for the book rating, but i guess it's an okay move to reread the book.
