"We shouldn’t have to fight.”
“We shouldn’t”
“But we do. If we don’t, Binary and HEX will take over. They’ll destroy everything, make the Altiverse into what they want.”
“A silver dream”
― Joaquin to Joey Harker ―

Hello Readers! Welcome back to chapter three of "Outshine The Previous" series where i will read a next book of a previous book that didn't really meet my expectation and give it a second chance to see if you really need to continue this series or you don't have to since i've already been there. Today i'm bringing you the second book of Interworld series : Silver Dream. Without further ado, let's get into it!

Previous Book

In the previous post of my blog i've done a review for the first book because i FINALLY re-read a book (which i've never done it in like at least almost ten years now, since the only book i reread was twilight series and that was when i was in collage around 2008-ish, yes i know i'm that old). To be honest i almost put down this series at that time since i didn't find the next book by indonesian publisher, yet i find it in Big Bad Wolf event last year and decided why not start collecting them again then read it?

A bit flashback about the first book, our main character, Joey Harker accidentally walked through another universe that alert HEX (a group that use Magic and wanted to control all the universe with the magic) got caught by Lady Indigo (a beautiful woman with magic ability to made you do what she asked for) and then  got saved by Jay member of Interworld a group that consist of Walkers that fight for the balance between Magic and Science which consist of lots of people looks like Joey who actually him but in another Universe.

And there he discover his ability as the strongest Walker to be found so far with ability to go across the universe and help Interworld to do their mission to keep balance between Magic and Science, because not only HEX that want to rule all the universe with magic, but Binary (another villain group) also want to rule world with their science.

Synopsis

After the fight with Lady Indigo and Lord Dogknife and bring back his teammates, Joey again back into the Interworld. Going out into a mission of extractions (finding another Walkers) also doing every mission that the Old Man asked him and his team to do that seems to be a regular day, until one mission to hack data from Binary (the opposite group of HEX that use Science and want to rule the world with Science and has been in war with HEX for so long) almost got caught by the Binary, Joey met the girl name Acacia Jones, a mysterious girl that the only one that is not look like Joey but accepted in Interwold only with Joey to accompany her everywhere.

One thing happened after that is a rare event when they receive a signal from a Walker, also another one almost in same time in different location. Joey for just back from that Binary world got sent again to that world to finish his mission to steal data and also to save a walker that has been held there. Of course it wasn't just an ordinary mission.

Why Worth a Second Chance?

So to tell you a bit about the first book. I've read it three years ago in indonesian translated version of it and by the time i finished it i remember how proud i am to finish a sci-fi book that i actually enjoyed and so happy  for it. By the second time i reread it again, i just found it just an ordinary sci-fi book that you would encounter. A boy discovering his ability, two sides of villians with Interwold in between and Joey as the center of it. Lost memory of any of it, but bring it back thanks to Hue his Multidimentional friend, yes so far sounds fun but the "final fight" was a bit bland to me. So in conclusion by the end of the book i don't feel the hype or emotional roller coaster or anything, so yeah it was so-so for me.

Since i got OCD and i always finish what i've started, i give this second book a second chance and read it. We met Joey's insecurity and identity crisis when he doesn't want to be called as Joey anymore because he's too old now to be called, and asked his friends to call him Joe from now on but he also sometimes call himself Joey (which is a typically coming of age problem) and this charming Acacia Jones who got called as his girlfriend by others in Interwold just another problem to him since he know nothing about this girl, tho he cannot really deny that Acacia indeed catches his attention from the first time they met (the time she saved him and his teammates from the Binary).

The questions keep coming when Acacia lost when the ship going "punch" mode where they kind of moving to another place and another time, and by the time punch done, Acacia is no longer there. The Old Man's reaction about his report for Acacia, which just act like it's normal and nothing wrong with that, just made Joey more confuse, plus when he found the picture of a younger version of Old Man (which basically look a lot like Joey because like i said, they are all look alike because they just from different universe) with Acacia Jones but she looked older there and they both look happy in the picture (which the expression never showed by the Old Man now) just made another questions.

A big plot twist of betrayal is quite shocking for me, while i was still trying to solve the mystery of the Old Man and the older version of Acacia Jones. Is it possible that there are another Acacia Jones just like Joey and his other versions? Is it possible that the Old Man IS the actual Joey but he just travel back in time? Is that possible to go back and have two of yourself at the same time? but yes it didn't answered in this book. Instead we discover more scary thing. HEX and Binary joining force! And they are awakening (or building? turning on? whatever the phrase it is) "the Frostnight" which has been mentioned by Jay before his death in first book. And they turning it in by using Joey's power.  Spoiler : The book end up with a cliff hanger unlike the first book. So make sure you got the next book ready.

In Conclusion

I read a lot of review of this book in Goodreads and lot s of people hate it. Saying that this is definitely not a Neil Gaiman's works, he probably just gave the ideas and Michael Reeves is the one who wrote it, but since i haven't really read any of Neil Gaiman's books, i can't really judge the book by that. But all i want to say is, this book is more page turning than Interworld to me.

So yeah it's definitely outshine the first book. I gave it Uh-Yeah  (read my rating system here if you don't get what it means) for the rating the book). They said it has the problem as the second book syndrome as too much introduction, i don't really agree with that because it does has it's own action time, which to me a lot more than the first book. And Joey's inner self problem as his trauma for keep blaming himself for anyone that died,  (a PTSD the Old Man said) just made Joey's character grow more deeper not just a boy but a growing up man for being able to cope with that. So yeah, give it a try!
