“You know the problem with heroes and Saints? They always end up dead.”
― A Wise Woman ―
Hello peeps! Again, this this i gave you another "Is It Worth Reading?" series, a short review for a short read, where i will review a novella or companion book and rate it if it worth your time to read it, does it need to be read in order to understand the main plot of the main story, or just skip it to save your time. This also will be the last post for first September month theme Novellas week, be ready for the new theme for next post! So, without further ado, let's dive in!
Reading Order
As always by our reading bible Goodreads, this book is listed as a companion for Grishaverse. It means it's a companion books for Grisha related books like Shadow and Bone trilogy, Six of Crows duology and Rule of Wolves duology.
I personally read this book after i read all three of those series. To be honest i will suggest you to do the same or at least to read Shadow and Bone series and Rule of Wolves duology at least because the book consist of two saints that added recently that mentioned specially in these two series.
What is it All About?
This book is all about the Saints that believed in Grisha. Lots of them mentioned in the series, but some also new that haven't really mentioned in the book. Each Saints got their own chapter, with an illustration for them in the beginning of their chapter.
The stories consist of two type of stories. The one that talked about the story about how the saints become the saints, and the other type is the story about other people experiencing the miracle by that saints (so it's not about the history about the saints, but a tale about people experiencing miracle while meeting the saints.)
Is It Worth Reading?
Like i said before that the stories got two type of story, the beginning of the saint become the saint, and the story of other people experiencing the miracle of this particular saint. After reading King of Scars duology i was so excited to learn about three saints that appeared in the series, specially Juris.
I really want to know about his fights with the dragon and how he became the saint. But instead of the story of how Juris became the saints like two other saints ( Lizabetha of the Roses and Grigori of The Wood) Juris's story is the type two of the story, about how people encounter him. Which is a bummer for me.
All the stories about the Saits are quite tragic in my opinion, like Sankta Anastasia who became saints because her blood can heal plague and end up died because lost of blood since she gave it to people to save them. And Sankt Vladimir who takes water further away from the shores because the villagers need to make a harbor, lasts like that for 30 days, died because of exhaustion.
My Verdict
The book included with illustrations about story in each Saints which for illustrated book fan would be fun to have, plus the design of the book itself are just so classy. I personally would collect this book just because of the packaging of it. But for me this companion book are just too boring for me. I would suggest to myself to skip it since i'm no big fan of illustrations. Plus it really didn't give a big part in the whole series in my opinion. Just like a trivia kind of book but the trivia is not too important to know.
