John Green
So i met this man by watching the Fault in Our Stars movie. I dunno why exactly i watch it, is it because of Ansel Elgort or Shailene Woodley, or is it because the movie was so booming. Of course i become curious about the book and that's the start, not only become a big fan of his books, i also subscribing his youtube channel with his brother Hank Green, which used to be called as "brotherhood 2.0" in 2003 which they keep stop communicating each other via call or message and email, but posting videos back to back each weekdays for a year then change it to "Vlogbrothers" in the january 2008 where they no longer have to do it everyday.
I also listen to their podcast "Dear Hank and John" which is Hank wish in his birthday (i think it's his 35th birthday) , which is super fast because i think they do it right away (i think less than a month after they talked about it). This podcast first episode was back in 7th June 2015 and still going every week today! (and yep i listen to all of them).
Whole Works of John Green
1. Looking For Alaska
This first book of him released back in 2005, this book is based on his time in Indian Spring School (i googled it to make sure, and yep it's true) and this also been adapted to series in Hulu (John Green also talked about the set, which is the same one with his school).
This story follows Miles “Pudge” Halter who's obsessed a lot with people's last word. The one that big enough to make him wondering is “the Great Perhaps” by Francois Rabelais. He met Alaska in the boarding school, she's pretty, sexy smart and all perfect thing you can find in a girl. Then something happened. This is his adventure in finding her (or i guess to solve the mistery).
I won't say much about the synopsis just in case you haven't read it.
2. An Abundance of Katherines
The second book released in 2006. I remember he talked about this book in brotherhood 2.0 videos, how grateful he is that his sister in law (Hank Green's wife) allow him to use her name for his second book.
This book follows Colin Singleton, a child prodigy who fears that he might not maintain for keep being a genius once he become adult. Dated nineteen girls so far all named Katherine, and just broke up with the 19th Katherine. In order to find his "Eureka" moment and takes his mind off from the break up, he and his bestfriend Hassan, goes to a road trip.
I like this one, Colin is one of character that i think i like, probably because he's smart. I dunno, i kind of like all of John Green book's characters tho, so i might be bias. Plus, i have this Indonesian translated edition with super pretty cover that i won't gave it up even to the original cover (gotta say, all John Green indonesian covers are a lot prettier than his original covers)
3. Let it Snow (with Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle)
This book released back in 2008, this is a mix of three different story but set in same place where the story talking about each main character's experience a huge snow storm in the town of Gracetown during the Christmas season.
This book also already adapted to the movie, i gotta say i like the movie a lot than the book, probably because i read it because of John Green but i end up liking the other author's side of story a lot more than his work, so it's kind of a big expectation turns out a let down kind of feeling you know?
I also prefer the movie a lot because, in the book by the end of the book you know these three story connected each other after you finish the book, which is kind of surprising, but the movie it's easily set 3 different story in one movie (movie magic fellas!) and i guess it's easier to understand i guess.
4. Paper Town
This book also released in 2008 and also adapted to the movie. The book follows Quentin or we call him Q who had crush on his neighbour, Margo. One night, a month before graduations she climb to his window and ask him to accompany her to an adventure to vengeance a group of people that hurt Margo. Accomplishing all the eleven plans, thinking that Margo might hang out with him after, turns out she gone missing. This is the adventure of W and his friends to search the missing Margo.
I really love this book. I remember i read it back in January 2015 when i was in a business trip and i read it through the road trip and finishing i at the same day and i feel everything when i finished it. I gotta say i love the book a lot more than the movie. I love the actors of the movie, but the book just explain a lot more tho (for sure, duh).
5. Will Grayson,Will Grayson (with David Levithan)
This book is probably the first LGBT books i've ever read (i dunno if i'm 100% sure of it in terms of first book with LGBT character i've ever read, but i'm sure this one is the first book that focused in LGBT relationship that i've read. Do you get what i mean?).
This book divided in two point of view, both character name Will Grayson, John Green write the odd numbered chapter with Will Grayson (the one with capitalized name) and will grayson by David Levithan always in non capital one. I gotta say it's easy to recognize which Will Grayson is when you read the book it's kind of hard to explain but well it's easy.
Will Grayson by John Green version is a heterosexual guy who tried to be invisible but he's a friend of Tiny Cooper, who described as "the world's largest person who is really, really gay", and will grayson by David is a gay who holding an online relationship with Isaac.
A bit spoilers, both of them meet eventually.
I don't really enjoy the book, probably back than i'm just super not familiar with LGBT relationship, i probably gonna give it a try again next time in future (the future that far far away, remembering a lot of TBR books left in my shelf).
6. The Fault in Our Stars
I won't say much about this book because it's the most famous among other books of his. But this book released in 2012, follows Hazel Grace who has thyroid cancer that affected to her lungs, she went to support group and met Gus the ex-basketball player and amputee (a guy with one leg, and a girl with tube to help her breathing! can't it get more unique?)
They fell in love, also become obsessed with a book titled An Imperial Afflictions and looking for the author asking for the cliff hanging ending, hoping for some explanations for the ending or probably the sequels for the story.
7. Turtles All the Way Down
What I like About His Works
What i really like about his works is, if you read them, and analyze, they will have at least one thing that really unique theme. In Looking for Alaska, we got the "People's Last Word" thing that really fun to read. Kind of a trivia about the real thing about real people that we might don't know about it but fun to find out kind of thing?
In An Abundance of Katherines we got a lot of math stuff (yeah, i'm that smart to type it "math stuff") a lot of graphs which is fun how he describe things with mathematics and we can see how the author works hard on this kind of character.
In Paper town we see how much John Green working out in writing this mystery of the missing Margot, we got a lot of clues to find and solve, which is crazy! I think i've said a lot about how much i love reading a book that make me think to solve the puzzle and put it down together? It really is a kind of book.
In The Fault in Our Stars definitely the love for a book, and John Green even made some chapter for it to make it super real for the movie, which is amazing.
Lastly, Turtles all the way down, i just can't say more how much i love the poets, the blog that Davis post, the quotes, everything just love it.
The other thing that i love from his work is, i always love the realistic ending of his every book. Sometimes it just punch a hole in your heart, sometimes just made you happy ending that flutters your heart. Some people just hate his realistic heart breaking ending sometimes that made them hate his works, like rating them lower, but i think i really like it. You doesn't have to make every book happy ending just to please the reader. For me, probably because i expect a lot in progress than the ending, ending tho it matters but didn't become the main reason for the rating of the book i gave, i gave it in overall, that's why sometimes an open ending, heartbreaking ending, never really bugs me a lot, of course it matters but not that much, do you get it?
Well, it's a log ranting blog this time, probably because i've read all of his works and i know a lot of his personal life (personal means not just his books but his other works in youtube and podcast) it just made me a bit closer to expert for this chapter? lol idk, i'm probably just being stupid.
Anyway, please read his works, those amazing works, amazing character development and theme i just can't rant more about it.
See you in another chapter!
