Book Review : When Friendship Followed Me Home by Paul Griffin
September 16, 2020
"Life is a journey. The best part is going uphill. Things come all at once, bad brings good, one door closes, two open, go trough both."
I finally decided to pick this book up after sitting in my shelf for two years. This is a middle grade books! I probably gonna give you a middle grade books recommendations next time but it depends on how much i read them in future because what is a book recs if it only includes two books? thee heet...
Anyway, i bought this book because of the cover (yes i'm a dog lover) and since it's also in cheap price, i got it in Big Bad Wolf event (i did quite a review about BBW event in my podcast, so check it out if you want to know. I also do a quick recap of books i've bought from BBW event in my bookstagram, you can check it out in my highlight for booktalk episode). Okay, enough for the back story of the book, let's get into the review already shall we?
Synopsis
Our main character, Ben Coffin (yes, he's special even by his name already) who is living with his mom, which is turns out his foster mother and already old enough for a 12 y.o boy. He's a big fan of sci-fi books, a friend to a librarian which turns out to be the mother of "the Diva" rainbow girl named Halley.
Being bullied a lot in school, he finds his sanctuary in library, got introduced to the book titled Feather by the librarian who turns out his one of few fave people that he'll send "wink" in the facebook to show her he thinks she's cool (or so his friend said, or something like that) that turns out that wink is sooo not what that means (that's what Halley said).
Ben met this little dog who got bullied by cat (yes cat!) help it (which also reminds him like himself being bullied) turns out that dog followed him home. Halley named it as Flip, Ben become close to Halley who turns out in medications for her tumor and help her co-write her book. But this is just the beginning, read the book guys for more.
My Review
I think this is a light read that you should read, i really like how this book took a 12 y.o orphan boy point of view, Ben is smart, obviously, and being an orphan made him know not to burden people. I really learn a lot from him. The story is heartwarming. I cried. Obviously, because i'm such a cry baby. Not because this book is full of sappy story, but because in some part, we'll be apart with someone anyway, either by moving school, home, city, or even death. The way this book present it just beautiful.
