Hello Everyone! Welcome back to another chapter of "So I Read Hype Book" series where i read hype book and see if it meets my expectation, and whether it worth the hype or not. As you might know, the theme by the end of the year (since I've reach my yearly reading goal) is "Finishing the unfinished"

Since i haven't read the first three of this series (yes, the first book i've ever read EVER was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, then later continue the next book but never the before) i decided to read this first three books (and probably reread the whole series, we'll see) and that goes on with other series that i haven't finish yet too. So, without further ado, let's dive in!

So How Hype is this book?

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's stone (or Philosopher's stone, depending in which country you are), by the time i write this review got 7Billions ratings and 124K reviews in Goodreads

I guess i don't have to tell you how famous this book is, they got lots of editions, even i found several people has personal library consist of all editions of it in several languages. With almost every year it releases another new editions of it. So, yeah it's super famous.

Synopsis

The story follows Harry Potter, the chosen one. He is living in a miserable life with his aunt, living under the cupboard under the stairs, got bullied by his cousin, mistreated by his aunt and his husband. Turns out he is a wizard and accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. After a lot of struggle to join the school because the Uncle and the Aunt didn't let him to do so, with the help of Hagrid, Harry finally got to go to Hogwarts.

But his first year in Hogwarts didn't goes smoothly. He got to deal with another bully, Draco Malfoy, somehow one of his professor, Severus Snape doesn't really like him and he didn't know any reason of it. And his famous name because of successfully defeats the evil wizard when he was just a baby, turns out trying to find his power back.

My Honest Review

As i mentioned before, i've read the book 4-7 but not book 1-3. Book four, which is the Goblet of Fire become the best book in the series for me personally, and in comparison with that one, i think this book is just okay. Here's some reason for it. I got slump, plus the book that i have is the edition that i want the most, the Scholastic edition with Hogwarts castle in the spine, but this edition somehow didn't bind well to me, cuz it has wrinkly pages, that leads me into really have to read it carefully to not breaking the spine. So yeah, reading slump plus not so good book condition to read : Not really enjoying it.

But based on the story, i guess because i've watched the movie for like several time, i already can guess the story plot and yeah, another not enjoyable moment. But to be honest the story was okay, i kind of see the puzzle pieces that JK Rowling planted for the bigger picture of the whole story, which made her such an amazing writer.

But some part that i learn by reading the book not just watching the movie is by how deep Harry thinking about the Sorcerer : Nicholas Flamel. (If you watched the Fantastic Beast movie already, you will find him there and he's kind of cute and funny.) And how sad the scene when he decided to just destroy the stone for  the greater good.

"to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure."
― Professor Dumbledore ―

Also by how Hermione is an annoying character at the first few chapter for Harry too. In the movie it shows that Ron didn't like Hermione from the beginning, but Harry was kind of neutral about it, but in the book Harry kind of annoyed with Hermione who always commenting about things that she learned and of course she's a smart one. This also show how deep the character already dig for her. She's a Muggle born wizard, and her  will to be accepted in society by learning a lot of it, tho in other person POV she's kind of bluffing for her knowledge.

My Verdict

The book is sadly a so-so for me. In comparison with the Goblet of Fire, it didn't really meet my expectation. Plus some scene is weird to me, like when he got detention along with Draco, Ron and Nevile, why Hagrid divides them in two group only lead by the Fang who he knows already is a coward. So yeah it simply didn't meet my expectation
