Duology Enough? Obsidian and Stars (Ivory and Bone)
June 09, 2021I pray only when I’m desperate, when I know I need her the most, and I know that in a way, that is worse than never praying at all. It shows I believe, but not enough to do anything about it. I know the Divine can help me, but I also know I can do most things myself.
― Mya ―
After such a good reading rush from the first book i was super excited for this second book but also worry whether it will be good enough to compete with the first book or probably a bummer that can't outshine the first book. First is because the ending of the first book is just perfect that it probably didn't need another book to complete Kol's adventure. Second is because i just can't really fathom how i gonna rate this book if it's better than the first one because i already gave it a full star read for the first book (i know! that shouldn't be the case, but...) Anyway! let's dive in!
First Book Quick Flashback
Kol from Manu Clan got three visitors from Olen Clan. Chev the elder of the clan, Mya his sister, and Seeri, the younger sister. Kol Clan's who has problem with no other girl in his age in his clan used to believe that there's no woman in his age until he meet Mya. Mya in other hand treated him badly, unlike her sister Seeri who's all over Pek (Kol's younger brother) from the first time they met. Pek believes that "These girls will change our life" indeed true, not only changes his life, taking it in emotionally, but also discovering the truth behind Olen Clan's history with Manu Clan but also with other clan.
Olen Clan used to be part of Bosha Clan, but they separated. Lo, who is the second prettiest girl (next to Mya) used to be in same clan with Mya and a good friend of her. But the separation of the clan just hit hard in Bosha clan because Lo claims that Olen clan took their best hunter. Discovering about Olen clan's whereabouts just sparks the Bosha clan wills to took a revenge on Olen Clan. But of course not only Olen clan that got the impact of it but also Manu clan too.
Synopsis
After surviving from the Bosha clan attack, and find out their feeling for each other, Mya and his brother and sisters, Seeri and her younger sister Lees. Mya's visit this time is to announce that she's ready to be betrothed to Kol. But at the time she arrived she didn't find Kol because he's going hunting with his brother and his brother. Decided to go after them she witness the scene when the hunting can go south, where the Mammoths are ready to charge in order to survive. This end up badly, that Kol has to lost his father that night.
In that night, the death of Kol's father just push Kol and Mya's betrothed to faster, and because Chev decided that he will not ruin their relationship between Olen an Manu Clan, he decided to agree with Seeri and Pek's relationship, although Seeri has betrothed to Chev's friend Morsk. Because of that, Chev decided to set Lees to be betrothed to Morsk instead but Lees who's already in love with Kol's younger brother Roon, they decided to runaway together. Mya and Kol discover their plan and stop them. But the betrothed to Morsk can't be stop unless Lees agree or Mya agrees to took Lees role instead. So Mya agrees to go runaway with Lees to the island that Roon discovered. But of course it's not ends there.
My Review
I would say some people will disappointed in this writing style, but if you understand both of our two main characters, you will understand why the author create such a distinguish writing style in this same series. Mya is a direct person, she's smart and stubborn but she is also strong. She got problem a lot in expressing her true feeling because she didn't want to get hurt, or not want to let go things that she thinks might change her because she forget and forgive. I would say, this writing style is so her. So Mya, and i approve. Yes i felt a bit sad because i like Kol's story telling style, but well.. this book has its own uniqueness.
What's Added
We got another character in here, Noni, a girl who's running away from her abusive father with her mom. But when they got into the island Noni's mom is no longer alive. But Noni later become the one that save Kol from his fever that he got from hunting the mammoths which gotten worse because he was attacked by a bear when he arrived at this island.
We also got another Clan in here Tama clan, who is lead by Noni's father. By the ending of the book, we can see that the Tama clan leader is dead and that the chance of the Tama clan will do another attack is low. So i guess Noni is save there with Kol and Mya.
This also lead to the problem that no longer about which Clan is telling the truth or not unlike the first one, but this include sort of "hierarchy" or politic in clan. With Kol's father is dead, Kol become the Elder, and with Chev is dead, Mya also the Elder of Olen Clan. Of course two clan elder can't marry, because, who's gonna lead? unless one of them want to step from their elder role which is not easy because the Divine chooses them. And at this part, my heart breaks.
“I shouldn’t condemn you for your unwillingness to do something that I’m unwilling to do, as well. You can’t walk away from your clan at the time they need you most. I can’t do that either. [...] I suppose the next thing to say is that our betrothal is . . . what was it you called Seeri and Pek when we first met? An impossibility. Perhaps we’ve become the impossibility now.

What should have added
I think it would be perfect if there's epilogue with Kol's pov after what happened. I really am curious about how they rule the clan after since it's obvious that they got some stuff to work on because of joining two clans together isn't an easy job, which one they will keep and which one that won't be there anymore.
My Verdict
I would say, it will end well just one book, but with this second book is more like season 2 of the series instead of in same series. I can't really describe why, probably because it took in another level in different POV in the second one. But yes, this second book is needed.
