June 16, 2021
“A toast, to self-government. Saint Etheldreda's School for Young Ladies will be run by young ladies from this point forward. Hear, hear!"
Hello everyone! Finally i read a standalone! After all the duology fiesta do you feel refreshed by this one? (well..i hope so) Anyway, this time is one of the book that i bought because i'm curious about the vibe of the book and by the title i'm guessing some murder case and mystery to be solved, so i bought it! anyway, without further ado, let's dive in!
Synopsis
The story start with the death of the headmistress of St. Etheldreda along with her brother in dinner. This is a school for women consist of 7 girls who decided to keep the death secret in order to not being sent home to their family and run the school by themselves.
Of course running the school isn't easy, with the mystery of how Mrs. Placket (the headmistress) and Mr. Godding (her brother) die and who's behind it. Of course a suspicion swirling among the girls but they also add lots of list of people who's behind it. Not only that mystery, but also Mrs. Placket didn't leave enough money to run the school for the girls to run it for their own.
My Review
The plot itself, of how they react for the death is just a bit dull, just like that. A bit creepy for 7 girls not going hysterical when someone die, fall from their chair in the middle of dinner. But the way the work together to bury the bodies, and even made Alice does the disguise as Mrs. Placket is kind of funny.
I would say the story is quite a fun read but not enough to made me turn the page after page for long time, i took 2 weeks to finish this book because i don't really enjoy the too much names. But i did enjoy the plot twist in the last few chapters of it. But i do, as always, love the set of Victorian era in this book. I think i love historical fiction because of this.
My Verdict
It's sadly a Nah (read my rating system here if you don't get what it means) for me. I struggled a lot, i need a lot of will power to finish even few chapter of it. But i can tell that i love the Author's note in the end of the book. And yes i love the Victorian Era, but the way they respond to the situation is somehow doesn't make sense.
