Book Review : An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green

"When you get stuck fighting small battles, it makes you small."

I probably have said this too many times, but Welcome! to the most anticipated book review! As a Nerdfighteria, this debut book by Hank Green is highly anticipated by me since day one of its release. I really highly anticipate this one since Hank talked about it in his vlog and i since than to avoid any spoiler I've stop watching their Vlogbrothers ! Yes i know! Now that i finally read it and also currently reading the second book, by finishing that one i will be able to continue without being afraid for any tiny bits of spoilers. Anyway, let's dive in!

Synopsis

The story follow our main character April May, yes i know, her name itself already a unique name (or am i too bias for this?) she is a graphic designer that one day stumble (or should we call accidentally found, since she didn't literally stumble) across with a giant robot that suddenly show up. Calling her friend Andy, who is a youtuber to suggest him made a video about this magnificent robot. Andy, spontaneously asked her to be in the video instead of recording himself there. Doing a kind of fake interview with this robot that she (again) spontaneously calls it as Carl.

Less than 24hrs that video went viral, because not only in new york, this Carl robot also appears in other different places and how it appear, why and who made it is become a big mystery. The Dreams that happened after the appearance of Carl consists of lots puzzle and riddles to solve and the questions are just added more in the list. But of course not all people accept this Carl robot welcome-ly, some with theories of invasion and of course April May is one of the one that think Carl didn't appear with bad intentions to humanity.

 My Review

I got to say i really have fun reading few chapters in the beginning of the book, because i can see so much Hank's personal life in this book. The song itself that mentioned in this book is Don't Stop Me now by Queen is the one that John Green can't stop singing while they are answering questions in the Vlogbrothers in one of their reunion which is rare since they are living in separate places so watching them in one video is such a special video in there. Also how addictive Hank to twitter is also part of him that added in this book as the main thing that mostly April do in daily basis.

I did has a struggle in the middle of the book because April May is become famous so fast, she left her girlfriend that from the beginning she still has this trouble to define the status of her relationship with Maya, and ditching her like that just called her as a roommate, no more than that is a bad move to me, and how her hate to the defender (the one who claim Carls are dangerous) is somehow made me don't really support her. Instead of finding the answers of the dreams she just busy being famous and counterattack every statement by defenders in social media. Okay maybe i can understand that part, but.. She got drunk and flirting with other girl??? She's too drama queen to me, which one of the trope that i don't really like.

By the middle of the book and almost 3/4 of the book i was going to say "Hank, i'm disappointed to you!" but that ending thooo!!! oh my gawd yess Hank i love you! he never fails to amaze me, what an ending! whoaa...

i won't say much for that one, just read it.

My Verdict

I gave it as a Uh Yeah (read my rating system here if you don't get what it means) for me, i love the ending specially, and the beginning, but yes of course i hate the middle of it, the struggle is real but it was worth it.
