Is It Worth Reading : Ghost of the Shadow Market by Cassandra Clare
July 31, 2021
“A secret too long kept can kill a soul by inches. I watched a secret almost destroy a man once, the finest man ever made. Such a secret is like keeping treasure in a tomb. Little by little, poison eats away at the gold. By the time the door is opened, there may be nothing left but dust.”
― Brother Zachariah to Matthew Fairchild ―
Hello Peeps! Welcome back to another chapter of "Is it worth reading?" series which dedicated to novellas and companion books, and by the end of the review i will tell you whether is it worth reading or not, does it matter to the main story or you can just skip it to save your time. This time, i give you the last companion book in Shadowhunter world so far (i believe) and it's time for Jem and Tessa!
This will also be the closure of the Shadowhunter Special Month for this blog. I would say it's such a good month for me, since i read more than 6 books so far this month thanks to Cassandra Clare. So, without further ado, let's dive in!
Reading Order
This book counted as a companion in shadowhunter world just like Bane and Simon's companion book. But since this book consist of books that related to TID and TMI, of course, so i expect you to read them before this one, but also TDA.
I highly recommend you to read this one after TDA to avoid major spoiler. And yes, reading Simon and Magnus stories first would be amazing. But the actual timeline that happened in this book is after TID series and go on until the end of TDA series. So the timeline is quite long.
What is it All About?
The book consist of 10 short stories, with each chapter got an illustration in it unlike Simon and Magnus that has kind of comic scene in each chapter highlight. Most of the story focusing in Jem as Brother Zachariah's adventure in Shadow Market, each chapter consist of two POVs, the first is Jem's POV and the other is the characters that he met in the story. Some of characters are fun, like Matthew Fairchild, the guy that took the spotlight in tales from shadowhunter academy (simon's story) to me along with his parabatai James Herondale.
I think by the time i read this companion, i call made the whole timeline of the stories of Shadowhunter world so far (the unfinished series are not included like Malec adventure and the Last hour series) should i made it in separate review or maybe later after Cassandra Clare finish her shadowhunter series probably.
Is It Worth Reading?
I don't know that a Silent Brother can do his own things like Jem, adventuring to Shadow Market, doing his own purpose not as a silent brother but as Jem, trying to find out who is Tessa's father, and try to find out the Lost Herondale. I thought that Silent Brother are like Monk, living in the city of bones, and sometimes goes to institute to heal shadowhunter like a doctor.
Is it because Jem is special Silent brother? he doesn't sew shut his eyes and mouth, but they are still closed, but in the end he becomes the one that purified by the heavenly fire and become just a normal human at the end. I guess he is special. But i was surprised that Silent Brothers shares their thought. Because Jem said that he can hear their voices in his mind. Which is new to me, i don't know that before.
All the adventures are quite plain for me at first few chapter, but i love it when he met Tessa again, and she kissed him while he was still a Silent Brother! i mean, how come?? but his adventure to find Kit is more fun. Also we got the glimpse of Ty's life in Sholomance, the school that train Centurion. Personally Livvy's adventure ad ghost is fun to read. Also Kit's story about his living with Jem and Tessa is heartwarming.
My Verdict
I was so hype with this book that i though it will be talking a lot of Jem and Tessa's adventure after leaving Kit with the Blackthorns but at the end they didn't give much of it, but i'm happy to say you must read this one. It talked about the adoption of Raphael by Alec and how he see Magnus so charming even from the photo of it. Also i love the story about Kit also. How grateful he is to be in Jem and Tessa's home.
