"I think you cannot root out love entirely. I think where there has been love, there will always be embers, as the remains of a bonfire outlast the flame"
― Gwyn ap Nudd ―
Hello peeps! Welcome back to another book review, this time we are in the second book of The Dark Artifices Series : Lord of Shaodow by Cassandra Clare. I did the first book review in case you missed it just click the picture below and save me a bit for telling you the plot.
Synopsis
After the dark magic attempt by Malcolm Fade in attempt to bring back his beloved woman (that called as Lady Midnight in Shadowhunter tales) failed and died in the ocean, this necromancy attempt made the new organization "Centurion" (which is more like soldier but still student like shadowhunter academy but focusing in solving problems and mostly related to Faeries) that has been closed for years but reopen after the Cold War. Some of the Centiurion came to LA institute to investigate and trying to retrieve the Black Volume of Death and also Malcolm Fade's body that has lost in the sea but it hasn't recovered while lots of demon rise in alarming quantity lately.
Discovering the parabatai curse if they fall in love, Emma decided to date Mark in order to make Julian stop loving her. But Mark in other hand knows that his feeling is not for Emma but to Christina, but he decided to help Emma because she said it's for Julian. Being surrounded by all sides, for the safety of the Blackthorn family Julian decided to make a deal with Queen of Selie court who also promised him the answer of the curse of parabatai (that at that time he didn't know) going to the quest finding Annabel Blackthorn, the Lady midnight that raised from the death who has the Black Volume.
My Review
I never thought that i will need a time to rest while reading this book, twice! Like, i did stop reading it because i just need time and i just can't really continue with that feeling still going on, and then i start it again, less than an hour later i stop reading it again because, again!! i need a rest! Too much drama in this book that i literally can't help my self to say, "oh really??? c'mon!" kind of situation and i was practically ranting for how much drama in it.
Let me break it down to you what happened. Emma love Julian, and so Julian to her, but Emma discover the curse and decided to keep it for herself instead of telling Julian and decided that she has to date Mark because Julian always jealous of him, but Mark like Christina, at the same time still can't really leave Kieran the price faerie die in the hand of his own father.
Christina in other hand going back to date the perfect Diego after they "solve" their misunderstanding and then when the Centurion came, SURPRISE! He got a fiance! That Zara girl is such a queen bee that i just can't stand her and her friends just sooo "Mean Girl" type that i just can't really help myself to keep reading because i'm so annoyed by it, so i just have to take a break.
The Clave also become the problem when the Inquistior gave Annabel the sword, Jia as the Consul didn't asked right away about who killed Malcolm, but going here and there, and yet the crowd easily swayed by that father of Zara Dearborn. She know already that Zara lied about she killed Malcolm yet still torturing Annabel who already lost her mind because of the trauma being tortured with mortal sword before, why not ask Zara to hold the sword instead if they claim the sword didn't work out well because she was dead before not a shadowhunter anymore? I was so frustrated by this part for seriously that it made me angry.
Livvy is such a sad story there that made me gasp out loud when i read it, i was hoping that the power that Emma has as parabatai that love Julian can made them heal her, but no, Emma just stay there in the floor with Julian. Which is.. well.. understandable from the shock but i was just wish at least she tries.
My Verdict
It's an Uh Yeah for me (read my rating system here if you don't get what it means). I struggled a lot at first, but i like how much adventure included in this book, the rescuing Kieran, finding Annabele, but yeah i hate so say it's too much drama and annoying characters in here. The stupidity of Clave is definitely took a big part in this book, yet the big trouble that came in front of them is there, they still fighting with each other between the shadowhunter. But I do enjoy the adventures to Faerie land and also it's a cliff hanger! Plus Mark is always funny. I love him.
