April 21, 2021
There comes a certain point with a hope or a dream, when you either give it up or give up everything else. And if you choose the dream, if you keep going, then you can never quit, because it's all you are.
Hello peeps! Welcome back to second chapter of "Duology Enough?" where i will rate the second book (which also the last book) of the series whether if this series is enough just end as a duology, or does it need more books or even just suppose to be stop as a standalone instead. Without further ado, let's dive in! (click the picture below in case you haven't read my review for the first book).
First Book Quick Flashback
The first book talking about Lazlo Strange, an orphan raised by monks in Zosma, later found his way as a librarian and fascinate by the Unseen city that believed as just a legend until one day the leader of the city came to invite selected people with different abilities to came along to the Weep, that Unseen City to do secret task.
Turns out that Weep once was invaded by Mesarthim, a race with blue color of their skin and has special abilities. They are riding a big Seraphim shaped made of metal called Mesarthium, stealing people in the weep, mostly woman, made babies from them, then leave them back to the weep with lost memories for what happened to them in the Citadel, that's what the Mesarthim called them.
The tyranny of the "gods" of Merathim was ended by Eril-Fane who was taken to citadel for Isagol, the goddess of despair. He killed all the god and goddess there also all the babies. But the city isn't free from that big seraphim floating over their city, and he didn't know that there are survivor that living secretly in the citadel.
Found out that Sarai, the muse of the nightmare is not the only character that he creates in his dreams, Lazlo discovered that the remaining survivor isn't the god and goddess that people in weep believes, savage and villain, but they only want to live in peace, and taste sugar! Finding out the true identity of himself, Lazlo who turn out the lost child of the Mesarthim went to Citadel to save his beloved Sarai who fall from citadel and die in the weep. Asking Minya who has ability to bond ghost to save her. Of course Minya who's blinded by hatred to people in the weep didn't easily obliged.
Wow that's not "quick flashback". Sorry guys!
Synopsis
Asking Minya to bind Sarai's ghost so she didn't evanescence, is equal to help Minya to get to her revenge to the people in the weep. Lazlo who's torn between keeping Sarai beside him and yet has to save people of Weep from Minya's rage is never easy since he also promised Sarai that he will not let Minya kill all people in the Weep.
In other hand they also discovered the secret of why of all places, the Citadel pick this city to land and why they took woman here to "breed" baby then return them to the city without any memories of it, how many babies has born since then? and where are they?
Sparrow and Ruby decided to drug Minya to sleep in to postpone Minya's plan and searching the answer in mean time, but they just add more questions in the list instead. Why Minya keep in her six year old and never grow up, what's actually happened in that day when the godslayer came to kill the children, and the secret of Minya's power.
Also with Lazlo's ability to mend and manipulate the shape of mesarthium, they able to discover more places that once closed in the citadel and found the answers of the questions, and of course it's not a good news.
My Review
The ending of book one is just cliff hanging enough for me to want to start right away to this book, but instead i found the first chapter confusing. Is it the same book? is it an added character? is it a past? well those questions and confusions just made my barometer of my reading hype go low and that's the start of slow reading progress.
What's Added
I found that Nova is such a character that i want to give a pat in the back but also a slap in the back of her head for what she has done. But well... we can't help it, she can't help it. What do you expect from a person who has lost what so dear to her, and will do anything to get it back but in same time we can't justified her actions too?
Once upon a time, a sister made a vow she didn’t know how to break, and it broke her instead. Once upon a time, a girl did the impossible, but she did it just a little too latee.
We also encounter lots of theory of the world, more history that happened long long before this event. The mysterious of Merathim people, their power and the reason why Skathis invade the Weep. Which happened about in the middle of the plot in the stories, which also become the starter of my reading frenzy in this book. I made a lot of theory of this books, Lazlo's power and why he's a lost child, the power of Minya and others and the universe, everything!
I remember i stay up late in my turned off bedroom resisting to continue reading because i know if i do i will stay up late, like super late, while the next day i have to work. So i lay down in my ready-to-sleep-ambiance bedroom while my head swirling for the theories and probabilities of the answers for the questions in the book. Of course not all my theories are right.
This book also added a bit of Lazlo and Serai make out scene but i can't really say it's smutty since it's not explicit but still include some words that i think it's not really proper to younger reader, but it's still acceptable to be count as young adult to new adult.
What should have added
I honestly didn't know what should be added in this book. But if i have to, i really want to know more about the great library that been crushed by the anchor of the Citadel when they landed. I really want to know what's happening in there after. After Thyon Nero discover that the library survived, not all, but some part of it, and i really want to know what they can explore, specially Lazlo's point of view when he visits it.
I also want to know the continuation of their adventure, did they got the lost babies back. Specially the godslayer's mom, Suheyla's babies. But i think that would be better if the author made a separate book about their journey for it.
In Conclusion
I can't say more about this book, to be honest i set my expectation low for this book since the first book was so hype and once i read it, although it's a good book but it didn't really meet my expectations, i guess i shouldn't really give any expectations nor a prejudice about the book that i will read because it'll definitely affect to my rating and my reading enjoyment. But let's just face it! it's haarrdd to not to!
It's quite nice now to realize that the title of each book is based on the name of the main characters. also how pretty they are the book one which titled by Lazlo's name but with Moth in the cover, the symbol of Sarai's power, and the second book titled by Sarai's name but with symbol of Lazlo, well i won't tell much about this part, you might want to read it anyway (and i suppose i have to give something "non spoilery" in this review since i've done much already.
My Verdict
In the end you will know that it's best end as a duology! I love this second book a lot more than the first book (Obviously) I gave this book a Woot Woot! (read my rating system here if you don't get what it means) and it's perfect to be just duology. In fact i think it's the best duology i've read (so far! well.. i haven't read many duologies before, maybe it will change, like.. 80% sure for that) but we'll see! who knows the future?
I will end this review by the fave quote i found in this book by one of my fave character
“Wishes don’t just come true. They’re only the target you paint around what you want. You still have to hit the bull’s-eye yourself.”
