Hello everyone! I finally finish with this series, so a bit background story i start this book (the first book) back in 2016 so i kind of forget a lot of the things that happened in that book but i will try a lot to make this review worth your time to read! So, without further ado let's dive in! Also click the picture below if you missed my review for the second book.
A Quick Flashback
With that secrets, Leda holding everyone's secret and made them agree to said that Erin's death was an accident because she's drunk and slipped, instead of pushed by Leda. But the journey just doesn't end there. Mariel, Erin's girlfriend who didn't believe of Erin's death as accident while drunk, because before that Erin has sent message to her that she'll be there after solving the urgent problem, took a chance to drug Leda in Dubai, asking her a lot of questions which Leda answer all complete with the other's secret and left Leda almost dead in the beach, but soon got rescued by Watt.
And then back to New York, Mariel is dead. By some cold hand who pushed her to the river. And boom the second book ended! Yes another cliff hanging
Synopsis
The third book begins with Avery coming back to New York after taking a summer program in Oxford and falling in love with Max, who's coming along to New York, turn out Avery's homecoming become a spotlight because not only she's the perfect girl (who literally programmed to be perfect because of how much their parent spent for the perfect baby like her) but also because her father is ellecting to become the mayor of the town.
In other hand Leda who's trying to cut all the access of her old self, breaking up with Watt because he is the worse trigger of it. Watt trying to go back to normal by applying to MIT which failed to impress the interviewer since he tried to impress her instead of explain who he actually is, what "tics" him, which disappointed her. Watt trying so hard to get Leda back by helping her to investigate how much police know about Mariel's death connected to Leda because Leda got questioned by it.
In other hand Calliope who's staying in New York because her mom married to Nadav instead of running away for their con, after calliope asked her to stay, suffering by how strict Nadav is to her, and Livya who's Nadav's daughter who constantly suspecting her and her mom for not being honest for who they are and suspecting their con. Sneaking out several times and met Brice, Cord's brother and falling for him, aside for her identity, she talk anything about her true self to Brice.
Discovering that Hiral is no longer who he is, Rylin give him a second chance and going back to date with him again. In other hand she's working with Cord for school assignment at lower town for their psychology class, accidentally met Hiral there. After that Hiral seems a bit off, then one day saying goodbye to her. Rylin then back to Cord after he confess his true feeling to her, but then discover that Hiral is running away to Undina with help from Cord. Also with insecurities she felt by how different class she is with Cord, she finally breaking up again with Cord.
Wow, that's quite a summary rather than a synopsis, sorry guys.
Comparing Each Book In Series
In each book, their prologue always contain a spoiler of the plot, but vague for who's the one that chapter is talking about. First book about the girl falling from the thousandth floor scene, which is Eris. The second book is talking about how the girl look in the river, which i don't really recognize it as Marlin even after i finish the last book of this series. At first i thought that chapter still talking about Eris's death, how she looks like.
Later, (well.. last night to be exact, when i try to compare each prologue of the books) i discover that it's about Marlin instead of Erin. In the last book the prologue is talking about Avery, attempting to jump over the thousand floor in despair, saying sorry. And then the first chapter start three months before that prologue. So the last book is a bit different than the other two before because the "who" that always hidden from the first two chapter is already revealed in the last book prologue.
Characters Development
Avery, the perfect girl from the first book, who is kind to almost everyone, become the mean girl in second book, who is using another man to running away from the man she love, Atlas. First she use Watt (but she claims that she's not using him in her POV, but she hurt Watt anyway), then Cord as her date in most every event in the second book in order to avoid her dad suspicion about her relationship with Atlas, which then she kissed Cord anyway after Atlas break-up with her.
In the third book she become the girl who doesn't like the spotlight, hate the attentions she got because she's become the trendsetter in New York, also the daughter of the mayor. Dating Max the man who is kind and fun, understanding her struggle for a lot of people expectations for her in every aspect. But still got the feeling with Atlas who's back to New York. She already lost the main character for me who got the spotlight at first book, but she already lost it in the second book
I would say Atlas also different this time, not just a charming man that can't be touch in the first book, loving man in second book yet a good son, this third book he just become the man who mad in love with Avery, knowing that Avery is trying to move on from him, but still trying to "steal" her anyway. He actually lost the point from me in this book. Okay, he did slept with Leda in first book in order to runaway from his feeling to Avery, which is bad but still acceptable, but stealing Avery who's trying to move on? i just don't get him. Or maybe it's what people said, Love is blind, and how far you go, if it's fate, you'll back to the one who's your soulmate? but by this plot i kind of feel no no for them two.
Leda in other hand, the one that i don't really like because she's a drug addict, and tried to seduce Watt in order to know his secrets, become the character that i like better than Avery. No matter how bad she is, she still tried to be a best friend to Avery, try to solve the problem herself and not taking other involved to it although she's suffering for the guilt for the things she had done.
"You live with yourself because you have to. You forgive for what you've done. It can only kill you when you try to run from it. If you just look in the eye and face it, it becomes part of you, and it can't hurt you anymore"
― Rylin ―
Watt as always, got my support, from the smart guy with illegal quantum computer, to a man who helplessly falling in love with the girl who suppose to be his enemy. Plus i really like Nadia, the way she answer his questions, witty smart computer.
Rylin also one of the character that i support a lot, so bad that she got less part in the series. Her feeling with Cord, up and down, i go with her, like super blindly, knowing when Cord helping Hiral to runaway from New york, i was literally about to cuss him, how dare him! Using money to push a boyfriend away from the girl that you love? seems a bit sneaky isn't it? but yet again when truth revealed, i'm back in support of Rylin and Cord.
Calliope in other hand is the one that i don't think needed to be in this whole series. I mean, of course she's needed, but not as the main POV characters. If i can choose, i will pick Cord instead of Calliope for the added POV in second book.
Plot Twist
I felt the most significant plot twist in the end of this series. Even I didn't see it coming. I guess i can if i keep my attention for details, how watt who's witnessing the scene acts just like it's just a scene, but maybe because of the other surprise in that same time just took me in surprise. I'd say Katherine McGee did a great job at this last book.
I want to say more but i don't want to spoil everything, which somehow i just don't want to do it while usually i did it anyway. It just too good! That plot twist.
In Conclusion
I like the third book absolutely better than the other two books. I definitely like it better than the other two, and mostly because it's the final book of the series. I feel the book less drama, tho i still struggle with the book and still try to tell myself that i can do it and i can finish it. But this third book is definitely better that the other two. Although the book is so-so for me (go to my rating system for more explanation about that) but i'm happily said that i'm happy for the successfully finish this whole series.
