So I Read Hype Book : A Court of Thorns and Roses
December 23, 2020
“I was as unburdened as a piece of dandelion fluff, and he was the wind that stirred me about the world.”
Hello everyone! I finally start this hype book!! Yes i know! i'm so late, but well... since i don't start an ongoing series usually (because recently SJM just release another book for this series which i believe it suppose to be a trilogy at first, that's why i start collecting the book at first cuz i know the series is already end so i can start it and turns out not) but anyway because of my friend, nuphie who's the only reason i start collecting this one because she loves it a lot intrigue me, she want to reread it and readalong with me, so here we are! Me, reading the ungoing series. I probably gonna think it's end in the third book anyway because it was suppose to be like that, and if i end up reading the next book after, i will think it as another season of the series.
So How Hype is this book?
This book has been everywhere! In instagram, youtube and in tik tok even. To be honest i know that it's an adult fantasy with lot of make out scene because one account said she'll drink every time she read a make out scene in the book and end up as an alcoholic after finish the series, which is funny to me. Anyway, back to how hype is this book. The book already change the cover since (from the news i got form my friend when i asked why because i hate the new cover) it suppose to be an adult fantasy but the cover (the one that i show you here in the title picture, which the one that i own) is more like a YA than Adult fantasy. Which annoys me a lot, because i hate when a series change its cover in the middle of the series. But okay, let's go back (again) with the topic of how hype this book is
As always, by the data shown by our book bible Goodreads, this book already rate by 492.701 people by the time i wrote this book with 93% of the people like it. Even years before i know this Feyre darling and Rhysand hype that i know the characters already and dunno anything about the story.
Waterstones released a special edition of this book which as Indonesian i rate it a super expensive one. Yet it's still selling well, guess it shows how much people love this book for that special edition.
Synopsis
The story start when Feyre, a human who suffering in hunger with burden to feed her family, hunting in the wood when she encounter a big wolf, big enough that she think that its maybe a fae. Shooting it with Ash arrow that they believe can kill Fae, the wolf seems to be didn't put much effort to counter attack Feyre, and dead with another arrow in the eye. Feyre back with its fur to be sold in the market, because she can't carry two animal from her hunting.
Turns out that wolf indeed a fae, and later a big creature like a bear, appear in front of her house, accusing her as a murderer because that wolf is his friend. By the law, if human kills Fae, they either have to be dead or living with the Fae as the "replacement". In order to save her family for being slaughtered by the beast, Feyre going to live that Beast who turns out a High Fae of Spring Court.
Turns out Spring Court is currently got cursed by a sickness that they call it as the blight that made them lost their power, and can't lift their mask (that curse happen back in 49 years ago in a masquerade, that's why they're wearing mask). But turns out it wasn't a sickness at all.
My Honest Review
As i read more chapters of it, it turns out it's a Beauty and the Beast retelling, which explain the roses in the cover. But to be honest i can't really said if it's relate to Beauty and the Beast a lot here. Feyre is fond of painting unlike Belle who's font of reading (Feyre is illiterate actually here) and also she's not an innocent girl, where in the story before she follows Tamlin to Fae world, she "plays" a lot with a man in the village who's actually gonna married a rich girl, and she okay with it because there's no string attached in their relationship. In other side, Tamlin, our Beast, not exactly looks like beast, he still handsome beyond the mask, but well he's cursed and have to find a girl who'll love him no matter he looks like, so okay, i'll say it's still Beauty and the Beast related.
Because of this series so hype, i already know about the OTP of this series which is Rhysand and Feyre, not Tamlin. Through the few chapters of the book i keep reminding myself that Tamlin is not going end up with Feyre, and expecting a lot for Feyre's first encounter with Rhysand.
I stepped out of the shelter of my saviour’s arm and turned to thank him.
Standing before me was the most beautiful man I’d ever seen.”
And i would say, the encounter was, super dull (It's always become the down side of knowing bits of the story of the book that's so hype yet you haven't read it : a big expectation, then a disappointment follows). I mean, the most beautiful man i'd ever seen? i can call it as a cliché. To be honest even in the end of the book i kind of hate Rhysand.
I guess that's what i always feels about Faeries, they can't really tell lies, but they can actually give you indirect answer that can lead to confusion and yes counted as lies. And i hate that. They're just wicked. I have love hate relationship with that. I got it in TMI, i got it in The cruel prince, and hey, i just realized that lots of hype books i've read are Faeries related.
Anyway... I do like Tamlin, he's just such a sad kind of character. How he tried to help Feyre, though Feyre just being mean to him in almost every effort he gave to even just have a conversation with her. I mean Feyre easily become friend with Lucien, who at first hate her, but she just hard on him. I find myself said "oh no.. what to do with you Tamlin" or "Oooh... poor Tamlin" in couple times while i read the book. I mean he did help her family with wealth after he brought Feyre to Spring Court.
"Your family is life and well-cared for. You think so low of fairies that you believe I'd take their only source of income and nourishment and not replace it?"
- Tamlin -
One thing i like about this book is that this book is based on solely Feyre POV. I think it as a fresh thing since i rarely read a book based on the main character POV only, usually either it's from third perspective or multiple POV (you can see it easily by some reviews i've done recently). And yes i find it really easy to read.
My Verdict
I would say this book is a Uh Yeah for me ( go to my rating system for further information if you new for my rating system) BUT it doesn't live up the hype. I expected much from the hype of this book. And yes it contains a sex scene so i don't recommend it to younger reader.
