Book Review : The Wicked King by Holy Black
August 15, 2020You can take a thing when no one’s looking. But defending it, even with all the advantage on your side, is no easy task. Power is much easier to acquire than it is to hold on to.
— Madoc ―
So this is the continuation of the adventure of Jude and Price Cardan (well, we call him High King now) in the second book of Folk of the Air series. Just in case you missed my review for the first book "The Cruel Prince", you can click the picture below :
Flashback of First Book
So a quick update about this series, Jude a mortal was brought to Faerie world by her father Mardoc (well, not real dad, he is her mom previous husband) who is a general of the High King which mean he's good at fighting and strategy. Being mortal and got bully by Faeries, Jude want power, that's why she work as spy for Prince Dain, the second son of the High king, which people (or in this term, faeries) believe gonna be the next High King. Being mortal who can tell lies (which one thing faeries can't do) become Jude's merit and one of reason Prince Dain want her and gonna make her as a Knight in return after he becomes the High King.Prince Balekin, the first son, killed Prince Dain in his coronations with help of Madoc, also his dad (the previous High King) and all of his sisters who refuse to crown him (Prince Balekin) to become the High King. Jude and the rest of spies of Prince Dain stopped Prince Balekin to become High King by making Prince Cardan (the last sibling of Prince Balekin) as the High King with help of her younger brother Oak, who turns out is a son of the High king by a consort that no one know, except Oriana (Madoc's wife) and Madoc himself.
Well.. i hope you got the whole point of the first book synopsis by that.
Synopsis
In this second book we go thorough Jude's hardship to keep Cadan's position as king save to gave it later to her brother Oak once he's older and wise enough. Jude got power over Cardan because he promise to do it for a year and a day, become "the king of fool" for her, while Jude struggle to keep that king position in the threat of Prince Balekin's scheme to take over the throne although he's practically in jail (because Cardan don't want to kill his only living brother). Also keeping the throne from Madoc's scheme to take over although he's still the general of the High king.
So simply saying this is the struggle of Jude for keeping the throne save from threats around her while she's just a human versus the faeries.
My Review
This book is full of surprise, i like how the relationship between Cardan and Jude growing, a lot of tricks happening thanks to Locke who broke Jude's heart in book one and then going to marry her twin sister instead and also purpose to Cardan become The Master of Revels (well, in simple terms is, he's kind of the man who made entertainment for the king in occasions in palace).
Expect betrayal and plot twist! A biggest betrayal in this book took me by surprise. Never see that coming and i gave applause for that to Holy Black for it.
My Verdict
Read it! I gave it 4.5 stars read for it, Thank GOD i gave this book a go, because i'm quite a disappointed by the first book but i guess we can categorize this one as sequel worth read to save the whole series just in case you about to stop reading because of the first book.
Just in case you missed it
