Book with Elemental Powers Tropes Recommendations

July 22, 2020

Today's recommendations is gonna be my fave tropes in a book. If you are not familiar with word "Tropes", it can be simply called as an element in a book than commonly occurs in the book. Or.. as i googled, this probably the most professional definitions :

Any type of figure of speech, theme, image, character, or plot element that is used many times.

For example, Love Triangle tropes commonly occurs in the book, The Chosen One, also many occurs in book, Harry Potter is one of it, Percy Jackson also one of it, and the list goes on. So the Elemental Powers is one of my favorite tropes and these are books with that tropes that you should really read!

Elemental Powers tropes actually means that the book included characters that can control elements, such as Fire, Wind, Water even Weather like thunder, storm and bla bla bla you got the idea right? As a fan of fantasy books, this is one of my favorite tropes, always fun to read. I'll list it down based on the sequence i've read first not by the rating of it, shall we start now?

1. Red Queen Series by Victoria Aveyard

This is a dystopian series set in a world that divided into two type of people, the one with red blood, which is a normal human like us, and the one with silver blood, which people with superior power that can have superpower ability like strength, mind control, or can control elemental power such as Fire, Water, Iron even weather.
This book follows Mare Barrow, a seventeen year old red girl, the one that suppose to be normal but turns out she's not, and discover her true identity. This series is not only dystopian because of the classified in two cluster or group of people, but also a political fantasy because a splash of politics going on here and there.
I'd say personally that you should read the rest of the book because at first time i finished the first book i was disappointed because of the ending is quite cliff hanging, but the next book pretty much explain everything, the quest that Mare had to do is quite challenging and fun to read. Plot twist here and there and again, elemental controlling is the big part of the book that i think make it moreeee interesting, quite because i like it maybe? or maybe i'm being bias. But well.. it's recommendations, it's suppose to be based on my liking right?

2. The Young Elites Series by Marie Lu

This series probably should be included to dark fantasy you should read but i didn't add it in my review before but yeah so here we go! The story set ten years after an illness swept trough the nations, lots of people die, but some survive but they survived with weird markings. The story follow Adelina Amouteru, a survivor of that fever, but her hair turn silver, lashes turn pale and she got scar in her left eye (so yeah she lost her left eye) and people call them as abominations because of that markings. Turns out the survivors not only left with markings, but some of them also have superpower and then they called as Young Elites.

The Young Elites society is lead by Enzo who is a brother of the queen, but the queen strip him form the throne because he's one of the abominations.  Adelina story begin when she attempt to avoid Inquisition Axis lead by Teren Santoro that the goal is to destroy all young elites. She join Young Elites and the journey begins.
This series is a dark fantasy that the main character herself has some problematic past, and therefore has dark character. Seeking revenge and the answer for the reason why the survivor survived and has that ability.
I really enjoy this book because obviously the young elites got their unique ability and it's fun to read it how they use it in battle which sparks more magic into it. Although it's not fully magical world.

3. Shadow and Bone Series by Leigh Bardugo

I think i recommend this series too much already but i guess i don't mind because you. have. to. read. them!!! I mean, with Alina Starkov as sun summoner which super rare, Darkling, oh that dark character yet alluring, with his amplifier (which ability to make another's power up up up like a lot of stronger) and many other fun character like Zoya that has the ability to summon wind, water and fire.
This book is elemental heaven! Not to mention there are lots of unique character with deep character development. I think Leigh did great job at creating character.
Psst! even character that seems to be just ordinary like Mal and (eheum) Sturmhond are really eye catching. And yes, i'm having a big problem to pick my fave character here in this series.

4. Stormheart Series by Cora Carmack

You probably haven't really heard about this book, but this book left a big attachment to me. I really love the concept of the book, the power of controlling the Storm! I mean, if it's about fire, wind, water, okay i know it it's kind of common, but storm?? uh huh... i'm in!
This story follows Aurora Pavan, the soon to be queen that suppose to be strong in stormling family, but yet still hasn't discover that ability in her yet. She tried to keep it a secret about it, suppose to be married with strong stormling prince to cover her flaw until she discover that there are a group of storm hunter that actually aren't stormling but able to catch storm and use it as storm magic. Runaway from the palace, go undercover and joining the storm hunter to discover her true ability.
I haven't finish the whole series yet, but the first book, specially the last few chapter really leave me hanging and wanting for more for this series. I'm currently waiting for the last book to be released before binge read and finish this whole series.
P.S : This book include charming men, (yes men, not just one man) and also focusing in loveline too so if you info fantasy with loveline in focus in it, make sure to check it out

5. The Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan

I can't suggest you more to read this one. Full of charming characters with different abilities, Percy with his ability to control water, Jason with his ability to control thunder, Leo with his fire and of course all the character are unique, mostly plot included in Greek and Roman mythology which is fun (and confusing, if you haven't read percy jackson series first, so yeah go read percy jackson first!)
Quest for saving the world is always a fun read, but what i like about this series is that it's not only focusing in one hero, but heroes (just as it called the series, duh?!) which all are unique, all have their own vulnerable but also their unique ability and trait which made the whole series more fun to read.

6. Three Dark Crown Series by Kendare Blake

I've talked about this book also in previews recs, but this one is just one of my favourite series too not just because of the political intrigue and power plays in it, yes of course if you want a common analogy it's a little game of thrones here but with a touch of superpower. One with Poison which can't die even after gulping the deadliest poison in the world, one with elemental control which perfectly control wind, fire and water, the one with the ability to control animal and the growth of plants.
Not to mention other citizen also have abilities, some with strong power even black magic. Also, suitors! I mean, i always don't mind a book with handsome characters. Yep, i said it, not just one everyone, again, not just one.
Yes the dark theme of this series indeed one of the trait of this whole series, but i always love a battle full of power controlling (not just normal battle, but also elemental control) which spice up the battle more!
Definitely check out for this one, although a bit spoiler : people die. A lot.
