Today's recommendations is gonna be my fave tropes in a book. If you are not familiar with word "Tropes", it can be simply called as an element in a book than commonly occurs in the book. Or.. as i googled, this probably the most professional definitions :
Any type of figure of speech, theme, image, character, or plot element that is used many times.
1. Red Queen Series by Victoria Aveyard
This book follows Mare Barrow, a seventeen year old red girl, the one that suppose to be normal but turns out she's not, and discover her true identity. This series is not only dystopian because of the classified in two cluster or group of people, but also a political fantasy because a splash of politics going on here and there.
I'd say personally that you should read the rest of the book because at first time i finished the first book i was disappointed because of the ending is quite cliff hanging, but the next book pretty much explain everything, the quest that Mare had to do is quite challenging and fun to read. Plot twist here and there and again, elemental controlling is the big part of the book that i think make it moreeee interesting, quite because i like it maybe? or maybe i'm being bias. But well.. it's recommendations, it's suppose to be based on my liking right?
2. The Young Elites Series by Marie Lu
This series probably should be included to dark fantasy you should read but i didn't add it in my review before but yeah so here we go! The story set ten years after an illness swept trough the nations, lots of people die, but some survive but they survived with weird markings. The story follow Adelina Amouteru, a survivor of that fever, but her hair turn silver, lashes turn pale and she got scar in her left eye (so yeah she lost her left eye) and people call them as abominations because of that markings. Turns out the survivors not only left with markings, but some of them also have superpower and then they called as Young Elites. The Young Elites society is lead by Enzo who is a brother of the queen, but the queen strip him form the throne because he's one of the abominations. Adelina story begin when she attempt to avoid Inquisition Axis lead by Teren Santoro that the goal is to destroy all young elites. She join Young Elites and the journey begins.
This series is a dark fantasy that the main character herself has some problematic past, and therefore has dark character. Seeking revenge and the answer for the reason why the survivor survived and has that ability.
I really enjoy this book because obviously the young elites got their unique ability and it's fun to read it how they use it in battle which sparks more magic into it. Although it's not fully magical world.
3. Shadow and Bone Series by Leigh Bardugo
I think i recommend this series too much already but i guess i don't mind because you. have. to. read. them!!! I mean, with Alina Starkov as sun summoner which super rare, Darkling, oh that dark character yet alluring, with his amplifier (which ability to make another's power up up up like a lot of stronger) and many other fun character like Zoya that has the ability to summon wind, water and fire.
This book is elemental heaven! Not to mention there are lots of unique character with deep character development. I think Leigh did great job at creating character.
Psst! even character that seems to be just ordinary like Mal and (eheum) Sturmhond are really eye catching. And yes, i'm having a big problem to pick my fave character here in this series.
4. Stormheart Series by Cora Carmack
You probably haven't really heard about this book, but this book left a big attachment to me. I really love the concept of the book, the power of controlling the Storm! I mean, if it's about fire, wind, water, okay i know it it's kind of common, but storm?? uh huh... i'm in!
This story follows Aurora Pavan, the soon to be queen that suppose to be strong in stormling family, but yet still hasn't discover that ability in her yet. She tried to keep it a secret about it, suppose to be married with strong stormling prince to cover her flaw until she discover that there are a group of storm hunter that actually aren't stormling but able to catch storm and use it as storm magic. Runaway from the palace, go undercover and joining the storm hunter to discover her true ability.
I haven't finish the whole series yet, but the first book, specially the last few chapter really leave me hanging and wanting for more for this series. I'm currently waiting for the last book to be released before binge read and finish this whole series.
P.S : This book include charming men, (yes men, not just one man) and also focusing in loveline too so if you info fantasy with loveline in focus in it, make sure to check it out
5. The Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan
I can't suggest you more to read this one. Full of charming characters with different abilities, Percy with his ability to control water, Jason with his ability to control thunder, Leo with his fire and of course all the character are unique, mostly plot included in Greek and Roman mythology which is fun (and confusing, if you haven't read percy jackson series first, so yeah go read percy jackson first!)
Quest for saving the world is always a fun read, but what i like about this series is that it's not only focusing in one hero, but heroes (just as it called the series, duh?!) which all are unique, all have their own vulnerable but also their unique ability and trait which made the whole series more fun to read.
6. Three Dark Crown Series by Kendare Blake
I've talked about this book also in previews recs, but this one is just one of my favourite series too not just because of the political intrigue and power plays in it, yes of course if you want a common analogy it's a little game of thrones here but with a touch of superpower. One with Poison which can't die even after gulping the deadliest poison in the world, one with elemental control which perfectly control wind, fire and water, the one with the ability to control animal and the growth of plants.
Not to mention other citizen also have abilities, some with strong power even black magic. Also, suitors! I mean, i always don't mind a book with handsome characters. Yep, i said it, not just one everyone, again, not just one.
Yes the dark theme of this series indeed one of the trait of this whole series, but i always love a battle full of power controlling (not just normal battle, but also elemental control) which spice up the battle more!
Definitely check out for this one, although a bit spoiler : people die. A lot.
Make sure to check out my other recs by clicking the pic below just in case you missed them
For some and other reason i always (mostly) love the third book of the series better than the other two before them. Probably because it's the last book of the series which mean it's the finale of the whole series? Or is it because of three is my favorite number? Through this whole series that i called as "The Perks of Third Book" i will review all of the third book in series i've read and compare it to the other first two book before it just to see how it goes, weather i like it because it's the finale or is it just because i like it as the book number three, OR... probably i don't like it at all.
Well chronologically, Cassandra Clare finished the first 3 book of this series (where it was rumored as the end of the series) than move on to The Infernal Devices (which include 3 books), then continuing the TMI series book 4-6 back and fort from TID to TMI. I know, a bit confusing, but yeah. I'll talk more about it in other series i intent do post in this blog, so keep an eye of it!
Synopsis
Valentine was obsessed with the idea that in every generation there were fewer and fewer Shadowhunters—that we were a dying breed. He was sure that if only the Clave would more freely use Raziel's Cup, more Shadowhunters could be made
In Book two, Valentine try to steal the mortal sword, that usually used for questioning shadowhunter (by holding it, they can't tell lies) but turns out also can turn into sword that made demons and downworlder (all the half demons i've mentioned before) become slave of the owner by bleeding it with vampire, werewolf, faeries and warlock's blood.
In Book three, by gathering all three mortal instruments, Valentine intent to raise the Raziel (the angel who gave that three mortal instrumet to human, or in that case shadowhunters, who also made the first shadowhunter) and asked Raziel to "purify" world as he dreamed of.
So, that's probably sum up all the whole 3 books.
Origin of the Title
Those who die in battle are burned, their ashes used to make the marble arches that you see here. The blood and bone of demon slayers is itself a powerful protection against evil. Even in death, the Clave serves the cause.
Comparing Each Book in the Series
I would say city of bones is frustrating which is obvious because first book tent to introduce the whole system that set in the book, get to know each character, who's who and what they are, but i still frustrated anyway. I remember i start reading it back in 2014, put it down back then after reading few pages. Probably i don't really understand the mechanism at that time, so i try it again this year (after reading more fantasy books and get used to it) and end up finishing it, with struggle, yes, but finished!
"Well, I think it's kind of romantic, that whole business about Clary's mother being married to Valentine. So now he's back from the dead and he's come looking for her. Maybe he wants to get back together."
FYI i read TID first which is her second series of shadowhunter world after she wrote this TMI first season (book 1-3) and the characters in the TID is absolutely different in terms of development of the deep characteristic in each of them.
I mean like, Alec is different from book one to three, he somehow hates Clary probably because she like his prabatai whom he also has crush for, for some reason he didn't want to kill demon in first book (hunting demons isn't his fave thing to do) which i don't get to know why.
Izzy is being such a queen bee and reckless, how she treat Simon like animal (when he turns into rat because of her anyway, practically) just leaving him instead of try to help Clary to find Simon.
Jace in all of character is the worse in my opinion, he said he'd kill Valentine at first, then he took his side just because he discovered that he's his son, altho Valentine use the forsakens to guard them, which is ridiculous to me. He lets Clary witness Valentine battling with Luke and said that Clary doesn't understand, this is how it's done and better not to look??? oh c'mon Jace!
Clary is thickheaded, dunno anything yet go to all the dangerous that might kill her, well i guess i can still accept that because she's fifteen. But when it came to Jace suddenly she's a bit older than she is in my opinion.
In book two, again Jace being stupid by looking for his daddy, because he "needed to talk". I mean like, i get it that everybody questioning his identity and which side he's in, his dad or the clave and it frustrates him. But seriously, should you make anything more difficult?
There's also a scene that i don't think need to be included in this book. I get it that the author want to give a piece of puzzle, a hint, a teaser that would make sense in the future, but... Imorgen Herondale asked Jace for time to talk to her in the middle of battle? To apology and then discover Jace's left shoulder scar? in the middle of battle??? tell me if it make sense to you.
What i don't get it that, Jace said Clary didn't have to go, that he'll search for the cure for Jocelyn, Clary (and Jace's) mom. But instead he just kind of "make out" with other girl. The love line in here, is kind of messy. Well.. not kind of but definitely messy. Clarry love Jace, Jace is her brother, she make out with Simon instead, but still love Jace, then met Sebastian like he's the man that she's been searching for. Kissed Sebastian then compare it to Jace while kissing him? Yuck.
Go discover more Valentine secret and get the book that Magnus asked for, kissing Jace again and then get mad when Jace kind of relieved that he's part Demon that's why he still want her tho she's his sister? This loveline in this first season of this series really disgust me.
When finally her mom's awake, instead of happy Clary is just sulking again angry here and there, i mean after whole trouble she get herself into, for the sake of her mom she said, but when the goal achieved she just being kiddo again, angry at her mom, i begin to wonder if it was her truly goal, to wake her mom, or just going all the way for the sake of sticking up with the Jace and the others. Because she doesn't really truly happy with her mom awake. What I like the Most
Izzy indeed a Queen bee, but her love for her brother is worth to read tho sometimes she's being such overprotective sister, but i guess that's her part that i love. I also like Alec better in this third book. Not to mention I always love whenever Magnus takes the scene in the book.
I always love plot twist, discovering plot twist after another is such a fun read. I really like Valentine's character a lot. He's a Villain, but he has his greater goal, which actually, weirdly, make sense, probably because his persuasion ability, tho how he reach that goal can't justify what he did. He loves his family, or in other opinion maybe he's protective to them?
Isabelle Lightwood - City Of Bones
The Raziel angel is something, but the ending is also something.
Overall, i read first book with so much struggle, i remember i rant a lot in my instagram story about Jace's decision when he discover that he'll leave whatever Valentine doing with Luke, questioning what is his actually character is. The second book again i complained a lot with Jace's character, how lost puppy asked for father's love altho he knows that would made other people questioning what's his true identity
I have fun reading the third book tho. Mostly probably because it's more action packed, and set in "imaginary" world that doesn't really exist in real world, instead of New York where the other two books was set. I love Simon's story a lot, there's no single question for it. Magnus also take part in it. I think the sidekick characters in this whole series shine a lot more the main character which is problematic in my opinion, Jace and Clary.
In Conclusion
So what do you think about this first season of this series? do you like it? can you relate to me?

1. Best Book so far this year?
Actually i gave less 5 stars read this year in comparison with last year read. Probably because the more i read the book the more i discover my taste of reading? I become more selective to give 5 stars for rating of the book i've read, kind of saving for the best? The book that easily got 5 stars for me is House of Hades. As you might know by now that i'm a big fan of Rick Riordan books since i read Percy Jackson, i love his writing style and his joke. How he can add it in between of nerve wrecking scene in the book without really ruin it.
House of Hades i think is the best book in Blood of Olympus series. The adventure to the other world is so new, and a bit of dark which is usually we didn't really get it from his books so it's kind of special to me.
2. Best Sequel you've read so far in 2020?
Clockwork Angel. I think this book is the best for the whole TID series. Not only because it's the last book which mean final but because the complex of the story, the bond between the character and the plot twist! Just read them if you haven't already.
3. New Release you haven't read yet but want to?
The Ballad of Songbird and Snake by Suzane Colins. I love Hunger Games and dystopian books, so going back to the glory of dystopian books and hunger games is a perfect combinations!
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year?
A Beautiful and Foolish Endeavor by Hank Green. It has been released by the time i post this blog but yeah i'm so excited about the book. I haven't read the first book because obviously i know that there will be a sequel for the An Absolute Remarkable Things, so i've been waiting for this book to be released so i can start reading it.
5. Biggest Disappointment?
City of Bones. I meant, for a hype books and from a famous author, i expect more. Or probably my fault for having such a big expectations to it. if you curious about it you can just read my full review about this book here
6. Biggest Surprise?
Tweak by Nic Sheff. This is a memoir of Crystal Meth addict. Cruelly honest, shockingly sad and brutally heartbreaking. I will do a book to movie adaptation review for this book, so keep an eye for it!
7. Favorite New Author?
David Sheff and Nic Sheff. Their honest memoirs just blow my mind and break my heart. Also the first of non fiction author that i gave 5 stars in my whole life. (Well.. partly because i rarely read non fictions, but heck their book are amazing!)
8. Newest Fictional Crush?
Elio Perlman! What can i do? His character is my type! He is honest and curious, such an explorer. He's a music prodigy, he plays guitar, piano and read books. Trully my type, except that i'm not his. lol! Oh what a character....
9. Newest Favorite character?
Will Herondale. I always love troubled man. Sarcastic is one of my fave trait in a character.
10. Book that made you cry?
11. Book that made you happy?
The Lost Hero! It's not only because it's the first book of my 5 star reads but because when i got it in my hand i finally complete my physical collections and i was so happy. Actually i was literally screaming at that time ( i was forgot which one i order, Lost Hero or the last book The Blood of Olympus)
12. Favorite book to film adaptation?
Call Me by Your Name. This is probably the most re-watched movie ever apart from Twilight (i watched twilight every night before sleep back in my college life) i love the cinematography of this movie, background song, the story itself of course, and yes, Timothee Chalamet (like i haven't mention his name in almost every post of my blog. Sorry guys). You can also check my review about it here.
13. Favorite review you've written?
Beautiful Boy. No more explanations, just go read the review here.
14. Most beautiful book you've bought so far this year?
Actually i've bought a lot of books this year. Mostly during BBW event and some crazy discount. Apart from that two, i love my A Darker Shade of Magic series because i always love white cover books, and also my Harry Potter series by Scholastic that show the beautiful Hogwarts in its spine if they set together (which they always are)
15. What book do you need to read before the end of the year?
A forest of a Thousand Lantern. This book has been in my shelf since 2017 and i have to read it asap because it's the last book that i bought in 2017.
"You're throwing everything away."
"It's mine to throw away."
"Don't throw it away."
"There's nothing to throw away."
This is gonna be a series in my blog about me reading a hype books and what i think about it. So i'm planning to post it in "chapters". I think i rate myself as a late person for the hype, first because i have some anxiety that made me can't start an ongoing series, so i start reading them when the series is ended, which in some people is kind of late to the game. And i usually binge read them too because i just can't stand wait to the stories end. But nonetheless i'm still always late in the game. Apart from that, i also think that i have quite unique taste? Somehow i just love books that doesn't really hype for others. I love controversial books that have mix review, i took it as a challenge to read it and judge after that am i in the mostly people vote for or am i the odd one (both the result, i don't really mind). So here we are! A series of me the "odd" reading for Hype books and give honest review about it
Again, talking about Cassie's book is a bit big deal since i know how big her shadowhunter fandom in readers wolrd, I saw almost every booktuber talk about her books, and adores her works even have tattoos because of shadowhunter books that they read. I know that Cassie released 4 series already (three completed series, one new ongoing), and all her works are based on this shadowhunter world that she created.
A bit background of me reading her works, i read TID (The Internal Devices) Series first because of the timeline in the story was earlier than TMI (The Mortal Instrument) altho she wrote TMI first. I did it because i want to avoid spoilers but in the end i got it anyway. I'll do the TID and TMI comparison later after i finished all the TMI books (so far i finished 3 first book ) but that would be another series in my blog to tell!
So, enough for foreword, which is so long already, let's get to the honest review part!
A bit Introduction to the Hype Book
City of Bones is an urban fantasy book, if you don't know about the term "Urban Fantasy", it's a subgenre of fantasy that focus on paranormal or supernatural element that set in contemporary, real world. In simple word is that the character's adventure in our real world but with supernatural element added in it. It's not totally different world. Synopsis
Long story short, Clary got introduced to Shadowhunter world, where shadowhunter is warrior that is descendant of nephilim (half angel) that they job is hunting the demon. Turns out the world that Clary currently living is full of Demons, and downworlders, a supernatural creature, classified into 4 group, Vampire, Fairy, Warewolf and Warlock (or in simple term Witch). Shadowhunter believe that Downworlder is damned because unlike Shadowhunter that half angel half human, Downworlders are half demon.
So, Clary met the three shadowhunters, lead by Jace, the charming one but a jerk one. Then she got called from her mom to not return to home, but because she's stubborn she went home anyway just to find that her mom is not there but a demon there trying to eat her, she killed it, Jace came help her to escape from police-look-alike that turns out also a demon, go to the institute then boom! Welcome to shadowhunter world Clary!
This book goal is Clary to find her lost mom, and shadowhunters to stop Valentine, the famous shadowhunter gone bad because he created the Circle (a group of shadowhunter lead by himself) that the goal of the circle was to "purify" the world from demon, and that includes Downworlders (which in "fragile" peace with shadowhunter) and planned to slaughter them all but failed and then was believed dead, found in his home burned to death along with his wife and his son. Valentine turns out... *drum roll please* is still alive! And looking for the Mortal Cup, the one that can turns human to shadowhunter, so he can make army out of it and try again to "purify" the world with his army, that he believes Clary's mom stole it and hid it somewhere.
Things i don't like
1. Jace's character
I don't like his character. A lot! He's so inconsistent, at first he's cynical, but sometimes kind, then the last few chapter he just stupid. I try to understand his character because he never met her mom, died. Got raised by strict dad, then his dad is dead, got murdered in front of him. So yeah he got some issues, but being stupid when you seems to be the leader of the group and reckless because of some new girl? okay that's a teenager issues, i'll do okay with it, but again being stupid and change of character in last few chapter just because he met his dad?? He's just a slave for love. Turn side just for love without thinking clearly. His dad is literally using Forsaken (the human that turns into some kind of creature, slave for the one that made them like that) as his army and yet he's okay with it. That's so stupid.2. Clary's character
I know she's 15, but she's just stubborn more than 5 y.o child could be. She doesn't know a thing, she only knows what she want it and she got to have it no matter what other people think about it. She's too childish for 15 yo girl. But somehow she act too old in term of love stuff for her age. She's too cruel to Simon who just confess his love to him and knowing she doesn't love him back, he's heart broken, yet she take advantage of him anyway, asking for help for the sake of, like i said, what she wants she has to get it no matter what.3. A scenes that doesn't make sense
So in order to find the cup, they must back to clary home for the third time, this time not actually the home but her tenant that lives downstairs, turns out to be not human anymore but a greater demon, then Jace, Izzy, Alec try to fight him, clarry running here and there, of course because she's not trained, then that demon got beat by an arrow that simon aim to it. I mean, 3 trained shadowhunters failed miserably, yet demon dead by simply an arrow aimed by a human. What???Things I like
1. Simon's Character
I think Simon is one of my fave character in this series, so far i've read 3 books of TMI and i love how loving person he is, his compassion to art (this time his rock band), anime, and Clary. Tho i can't say the last one is a good one for him. He's surprisingly observant, how he knows what to say and to do, to stay away when he has to or stay close when he needed. Surprisingly talented, i'd say i do for simon than jace.i don't want to spoil for the whole series, but he indeed meet my expectation for the character growth through the series, or maybe i'm being bias because i haven't truly finished the whole series i might hate him in the end? who knows?!
2. Valentine's Character
I gotta say that Cassie is probably got talent in creating a villain character. I got the vibe, the deep of the character developed here is in another level. What he believes, what he want and his plan, yes man, the wicked man to the root. Good man gone bad is one of the interesting thing to read, a mastermind is always a interesting man to me.My Honest Review
I gave it 3.5 for this book. And for fantasy books, that's a low rate for me.If I gave 3.5 stars for contemporary books means it's okay, but so so. But if it's Fantasy, that's mean a loooow rate for me. Honestly i gotta say that i love the plot of the book, the highlight of it, the main purpose of the goal of the first book. But i don't really like the main characters in it. Not Jace, not Clary, not even Alec and Izzy in this book. I prefer the sidekicks like Simon and Magnus Bane, even Valentine.
I'd say if it's not because of TID series that i read before it and my curiosity about what happened to Jem, i probably won't suggest people to read this book. But because this is also related, probably yeah, maybe you should. or maybe not? because it's not realted at all for the first three? i probably will say different things after i finished the whole series. We'll see.
So, my Verdict for this book : It's not as good as the hype.
If you are a fellow reader like me that love fantasy but such a chicken for Horror or Thriller books (i probably can read thriller but maybe not horror), these are some my recommendations for Dark Fantasy Books for you to read.
If you are not familiar with the term of Dark Fantasy, this genre is absolutely Fantasy but it has a darkness in it (horror part but whole) as if you read it, it has gloomy dark tone or sense of horror or dread (that's what wikipedia said about it) some also apply the term to high fantasy stories that feature anti-heroic or morally ambiguous protagonists (that;s what goodreads said). So...i hope you got the point.
Okay that's a lot of preword that personally i usually skip when i'm a reader of the blog. So, let's get into the list already!
1. The Daughter of The Burning City by Amanda Foody
This is the first book from this author. I'd say she rocks it!
This is also the first book that i read for dark fantasy genre. You know it when you realize you got some goosebumps when reading it, also i'd say in my case, my brother (cousin) said to me, "i've never seen you reading something creepy like this" when he look at the book. Yes the book has some illustrations in it and kind of creepy.
This book follows a 16 y.o Sorina who lives in a circus city that moves from time to time. City that moves everyone! Already intrigued me, and she's holding a freak show with her illusions character, somehow one of her character that she thought was... well... just illusion, got murdered! So this is her adventure to reveal the truth.
One point i like about this book it also connected or should we call mentioned? the history of Sodom and Gomorrah, two cities that mentioned in bible (Genesis to be exact) which always intriguing when a book mention about something religious (but not to flip the fact of it and make it controversial) or just based on it is also interesting
2. Child Thief by Brom
This super thick book is probably seems a bit intimidating but believe me it's worth to read.
This book is retelling of Peter Pan which is of course in dark fantasy way. This story follow Nick's adventure when he runaway from home then meet Peter who saved him from some bully of his lord tenant. Then he follows him to Avalon where Peter got other troubled children that he saves. But the adventure doesn't end there, it's just getting started.
This story i'd say is a dark side of peter pan story because of the irony, how even for these days we can see what actually happen and what's right and wrong somehow it depends on which point of view you see and some troubles we can easily solve by communicate.
This is also describe how destructive human can me, Brom himself said that this book also inspired from gang culture that happening in real world, "how quick teens are to define their own morals, to justify any action"
3. Three Dark Crown
Three dark crowns based in Fennbirn where the queen as the ruler and when she bore a triplet she will leave them (or in some case die) and leave the crown. The triplet will kill each other for become the next queen when they reach sixteenth birthday.
This follows three queen with each has their own ability, one who controls elemental (fire, water, wind etc), one that is a naturalist who able to blooms any flower and controls any animal and the last one is the poisoner who can ingest deadliest poison and not die.
I'd say i got some trouble to choose which my fave queen that i'd support, at first book i was certain who i'd swear my loyalty to, but when the series continues it becomes harder to decide. This book includes supernatural black magic that made it fun to read. Plot twist is everywhere, shocking bold choices made by the author never fails to made my eyes bigger when i read it.
So definitely check this one out. I'd highly suggest you to read the first book first then the novella Queen of Finnbirn for the sake of spoiler free.
So that's it! As you might notice already i do have quite unique taste or sometimes underrated, but i hope you enjoy reading them anyway. Tell me all about it if you have read them and what do you think, leave a comment for which dark fantasy books you've read and you would recommend everyone to read.
See ya later!

About Me
I'm a booknerd who loves mostly fantasy books and think that sci-fi is my jam although i haven't really read sci-fi much. I tend to read more other genre but i guess i'm kind of sucks at them. I love collecting beautiful books, and yes i do judge book by its cover. Fell free to leave a comment, let's talk! Or you can reach me out in my socials below.
