October 21, 2020

" It doesn't matter what someone is. Only What they think they are"

Holland

As you can see i'm bringing you the whole Shades of Magic series this month, i've been wanting to read this series since 2017 because it was the moment when it was in the peak of the hype, but as you might know already by now, i'm always late to the game because i don't want to start unfinished series because i hate waiting years for the next book and left me hanging in waiting.

A Quick Flashback

If you haven't read this book and my review for the first previous two books, please click the picture below so you won't missing out.

So it's start because Kell smuggling black stone from Black London that has ability to grand people wish magically even if the wisher doesn't have the magical ability, turns out Kell's stone only the half of it, and the other half is in the King of White London's hand, Kell and Lila travel across the world to bring that stone back to where it belongs in Black London, along with the other half in White London.

Fighting with Holland, the servant of the White London King and Queen who bond him to obey them, also kill both of the King and Queen of London, sending Holland to Black London who is in the state of almost dying.

Turns out Holland isn't dead, he got help by the "King" of the Black London who is the Magic that destroys the whole Black London. Come back to White London and become the King of White London along with that Magic who calls itself (or should we call it himself?) as Osaron. Osaron help Holland to restore White London not just grey but with colors, and life, flowers and birds, but Osaron just can't stop, he wants more.

In order to keep White London save, Holland offers another deal with giving Osaron another body (not him) but Kell instead, but Osaron can only "possess" if the body invite him into, which Kell refused although he's almost dead because the suffering that Holland made him. Getting help by Lila, Kell is back to Red London, but Osaron already travel to Red London trying to be the King of Red London.

Comparing Each Book in the Series

Like i said in the second book review, that the first and the second book is different in terms of the concept. The second book is more like a bit of Hunger Games vibes because of the Tournament that being hold in Red London. But i think the third book is back to the same concept of the first book, with thrilling quest and stuff. I finally got to find "RUN" words in this third book again where i rarely find it in the second book.

Usually i don't really like the first book of the series because of the struggle of understanding the world building in the book, but i got to say i don't have that problem in the first book.

In second book i find it a bit frustrating for the plot because i just want Kell and Lila to meet but they just keep missing each other but i guess it's the perks of the second book so...i'm not that complaining.

In this third book i find it a bit weird in a plot where they're on the quest to find device that will keep Osaron inside so it doesn't have to be a parasite in Antari's body.

"An Inheritor, is a device that transfers magic."

Point Of Views

In first book we only got the Kell and Lila's POV which in my taste is enough already to tell the whole side of the series. In second book we got some additions like Rhy and Holland also Okja. In third book it just added more and more POV, like Alucard Emery the privateer, Ned from the Gray London, the King of Gray London, Nasi the kid in White London, also Osaron the main Villain in the story.

I found these additional of POVs are just not necessary, kind of dragging, except that Osaron POV which i find it unique because you rarely find the villain pov in the book.

Plots

In the first book i find some plot that i think i don't get it. Like how that dark shadow, black magic, Vitari spreads not only in Red London but also the Grey London, i don't get that missing part how that "disease" spread in Grey London in the first place, and it just add nothing to the story, they just separated totally from the story, like spreading, then dies once Vitari defeated, i was expecting Kell still have to deal that disease after but it just end like that, so what's the point of writing extra chapters with adding another POVs because of that but doesn't really add anything to the main story?

In the second book i also kind of wondering why the spotlight of the story is the tournament. Holland's progress is too slow in my opinion, almost feels like dragging. But i don't really offended by the tournament because it's fun to read anyway.

In the third book that plot of adventuring to find that inheritor just doesn't make sense to me, like the city is in danger but they leave it unprotected. Okay, they put the whole city to sleep but why not everyone sleep anyway? some are still awake, how the spell decide the one that will sleep and who will not? is that because of the castle? Also the unnecessary plot also included in this book, in Grey London, Osaron's voice knocking the door of Ned's is just doesn't really need to be included, again like first book just doesn't really have impact for the main plot.

Characters Development

By the cover you probably can understand the main character of each book already, the first book definitely made Kell the stars of the book, his struggle for being "in between" of property of the Red London or one of the son of the King and Queen. The second book mostly for Lila and we definitely can see how she grows her magic ability, and her true identity. In the last book we got Holland in the spotlight. About his history, how he become the slave of the King and the Queen Dane which his story i find it fun to read, i finally understand why he called Kell as the young Antari because Holland is older than Kell, while in first book i thought that he's about same age with Kell.

As the book going Kell becomes less and less interesting for me, he is being sappy and mourning and stuff? But as i said from the first book review, i don't find him super special as the main character as i usually find in book, he is just human that appeared to be the last Antari (or last two) but his kindness and smartness never leaves him tho which i think it becomes  one of his trait.

Lila is still annoying, not easy to love but i just fell for her character, how strong she is, thickheaded and such a risk-taker. This third book also finally revealed her true identity as the Antari from Grey London which is i was already assuming by the second book. I find that her scattered eye is confusing tho, how she can see and work well with that scattered eye tho? Like doesn't some part of that eye prick her? because she keep it long enough in the book.

Lila let her forehead come to rest against his, her face so close the features blurred. And yet, that fractured eye shone with frightening clarity.
"You never told me," he whispered.
"You never noticed," she answered. And then, "Alucard did."

While Holland is calm and mysterious, i always think this kind of character just suits me (i know i'm weird but mostly i'm attracted to this kind of characters). And all the journey of his, from being the slave of the previous King, and now the slave for the Osaron just made him kind of the character that i want to give a pat in the back.

“Death comes for us all. I would simply have mine mean something.”
Holland

But i won't wrap my review for negativity am i? Good news is that i like how Rhy's character developed. From prince that is charming yet witty in the first book, become guy who got resurrected from the death, loving his brother a lot and try to keep his and Kell's sanity, also from questioning his second chance to life into making it as the main advantage of him in order to save his people. The True King. I think the most touching moment is when he told her mom, while her mom failed to understand why he's so close to Kell which is not his brother by blood but treat him the same anyway.

“He was meant to be your shield, your shelter. You were never meant to be his.”
“Kell isn't the only one you fail to understand. My bond with him didn't start with this curse. You wanted him to kill for me, die for me, protect me at all costs. Well, Mother, you got your wish. You simply failed to realize that that kind of love, that bond, it goes both ways. I would kill for him, and I would die for him, and I will protect him however I am able, from Faro and Vesk, from White London, and Black London, and from you.”

Another scene that really melts my heart is when Rhy must let his father go facing Osaron. It's obviously a suicide for Maxim the king because Osaron obviously can beat him easily, that made Rhy practically begging for his father to not going outsite to face Osaron.

A king belongs with his people.
A prince belongs with his king.
"Then be with him, by honoring his last request"

I think i cried or at least got teary while reading this part.

Loveline

I got to say i always love the way Kell and Lila talk to each other, yes they are somehow frustrating in some way because circling each other.

“I have never known what to make of you. Not since the day we met. And it terrifies me. You terrify me. And the idea of you walking away again, vanishing from my life, that terrifies me most of all.”

You might also encounter with LGBT relationship in this book from Rhy and Alucard. But to be honest, i got confused also by why Alucard left Rhy at the first place, because Kell once confess that when the king asked him to track Alucard he said he can't track him but in truth that he's the one that asked Alucard to leave? but then it revealed why the main reason Alucard leave the city and become the pirate at first then privateer, so the story doesn't really match. Am i missing something? But i really like how he and Kell talk to each other.

"Picking out a gift?" asked the captain.
"No."
"Good, then take this". He dropped a ring into Kell's hand.
Kell frowned. "I'm flattered, but I think you're asking the wrong brother.”

This scene definitely made me chuckle, the wrong brother he said, 😂. I love how they bickering each other and throwing sarcasm here and there.

“I told you to keep him safe, not cuddle."
Alucard spread his hands behind him on the sheets. "I'm more than capable of multitasking”

In Conclusion

I don't think this last book live up my third book perks, i mean i love the book, i rate it in same rate as the other two, it's a uh yeah for me (go to my rating system for more explanation about that), a bit of lack is the dragging chapter in POVs that i don't think needed to be add in the story. And the reason why i said it doesn't live up the third book perks for me because if i have to choose which my favorite book among the whole series i would pick the first book instead. But again this book is worth reading, and definitely live up the hype.
